The "Blue Wave"....wait there's more?

An update to a post from awhile ago involving NFL stars dancing and singing, the guys over at Holy Taco compiled a pretty sweet list of NFL music videos with team songs.  As Dan Patrick reviewed modern-day team songs during the Conference Championship weekend, let's take a journey back to the decade where being flamboyant did not necessarily equate to homosexuality.  And for good measure I'll go ahead and post the much loved "Super Bowl Shuffle" - since it is Super Bowl weekend.  Find the rest of the videos here.

A Follow-up to a Reader...

.... you've never been so right or wrong at the same time in your entire life, and here's why.

My Post Yesterday dealt with a reader pushing for Armanti Edwards and Heisman Consideration. I attacked his defense of App St. beat Michigan who beat Florida who had Tebow because of how little sense it makes in the scheme of sports discourse, as well as the fact that I absolutely hate when people make arguements like that since each and every game is different.

As 4Real pointed out last week Heisman voting has not always been fair. McFadden deserved it in 2006 but he was a Sophomore and didn't receive it. The uproar that followed helped Tebow win it this year. McFadden wasn't the first to get left out of the Bronze Stiff Arm club unfairly. The award was given out 26 years before a black football player won it, 10 years before a Junior won it (still have only won 14 compared to 57 Senior winners). The voters tend to stick to the traditional voting patterns. Hell if voting was done at the end of the season, including Bowl games, like it should be I'm not so sure Tebow would have walked away with the BSA since McFadden amassed 400 yds and 4 TDs in the 2 weeks after votes went out. I'm not saying Tebow didn't deserve it this year, because he had a season like no other. I'm just saying McFadden would have been closer and traditionalists would have had a reason to vote McFadden a little bit higher. But I digress. The point of this is that, though reasoning is absolutely absurd, that reader is right.

Armanti Edwards does belong in contention for the Heisman in 2008-2009 season. That is, if he can have a similar season next year that he did this year. Here's the thing. He won't win, we all know that voting has it's staunch history and Appalachin State isn't going to garner enough attention in Heisman consideration, unless somehow this article gets picked up by the AP and sent to papers world-wide. Again, it's not fair, alas such is life. OTSS - Only The Strong Survive. It's the same reason mid-major teams like Hawaii have to go undefeated just to be invited to a major Bowl Game when the major teams can have 2 losses and win the Crystal Football. It's why USC gets 6 of the top 10 Running Backs and Quarterbacks in every single recruiting class. These kids will sit on the bench for a season or two because they might win the National Championship and will get award recognition when it's their time to play. FBS>FCS. It is what it is. I'm not saying it's fair.

Armanti Edwards went to Appalachin State because they told him he could play there and get an education. He would get a chance at winning the FCS Championship (which Appy State has done 3 straight times now) and he knew that going in. Edwards had 17 passing TDs and 21 rushing TDs, pretty outstanding numbers. Some other numbers for Armanti supporters. 1994, Steve McNair, 44 TDs, 3rd in Heisman Voting, 1977, Doug Williams, 3286 (#1 in all of NCAA) passing yds, 38 TDs 4th in Heisman Voting, Jerry Rice, 1984, 112 Receptions, 1,845 yds, 27 TDs (Best in NCAA), 9th in Heisman Voting, Walter Payton, 1974, 14th in Heisman Voting. What's the point of all of these numbers. Armanti might get some consideration but the sad fact is, a D - IAA or FCS or whatever player, will not win the Heisman. Their numbers may be spectacular enough to get noticed, but none of the staunchy voters will think enough of their competition to award them the trophy.

Arizona Rattlers Lay Down A Friendly Wager

I don’t know how I missed this one. The Arena Football League’s Arizona Rattlers have made a hefty wager with their fans. They are offering a 100% money back, no strings attached guarantee that they will make the playoffs. If they don’t you will be refunded 100% of the amount you paid for your season tickets.

What do they have to lose right? Well…..

2007 Average Attendance: 10,077

2008 Season Ticket Packages at $744.75, $645.75 and $528.75 are already sold out. An average season ticket package would cost you around $312 for the year. If roughly half of the average attendance are paying the average season ticket price then the Rattlers are looking at losing over a million dollars just in ticket prices alone. In case you were wondering…the salary cap for an Arena Football team is 1.82 million.

2007 Record: 4-12

Last year the Rattlers finished second to last in the American Conference’s Western Division. This is the same division that the defending Arena Bowl Champion San Jose Sabercats call home. The only team they finished ahead of? The Las Vegas Gladiators. The Gladiators have subsequently folded and moved to Cleveland to disappoint me in upcoming years.

This will be Head Coach Kevin Guy’s first year…no pressure.

4real out.....

Let's talk Super Bowl...parties

After weeks of being scattered around the Phoenix-Metro area, I've finally settled down into my pad in the heart of Scottsdale, AZ - sans internet at my place ( who would've known so many people at this apartment complex were smart enough to encode their wireless networks). I've managed to ghetto rig my computer to use my cell signal as an internet signal. Yah, you're jealous I know. However lets get to the goodies. I am lucky enough to be smack dab in the middle of the FBR and Super Bowl crowd. Cold-weather migrants have been clogging up the streets to watch these two awesome sporting events for the past week making traffic absolutely amazing. However, with the Hooter's Super Bowl Celebrity Party at Taste, the MySpace VIP Super Bowl Party in Glendale, Lawrence Taylor's Golf/Fundraiser thing happening downtown, as well as a NFL Celebrity Poker tournament at the Fort McDowell Casino, it seems like the only people around here that know that there's a football game to be played are the two teams playing and the stadium crew. Sitting around with basic cable and lacking any sports channels, I had assumed there would be extensive Super Bowl coverage seeing as how AZ is hosting this auspicious occasion. But even the sports segments of these local news channels have failed to report on anything game related - interviews, analysis, football in general. I remember watching the Super Bowl years before and thinking man this is the biggest game of the year, there's people sleeping in the parking lot of the stadium...pulling week long tailgates. Even this months GQ ( if you think I'm a bitch for reading GQ then I have a middle finger full of hate for your redneck face) had an article titled "When The Super Bowl Was Super Bad"(Bad in a good way old man). Michael Silver stated that the Super Bowl used to be about the teams playing rather than the event itself; that the best parties happened in the players' hotels and not at these over-priced clubs. Hearing about these crazy real VIP style parties with our favorite athletes is what I remember hearing about. You know, stuff that Music Videos are made of. Now the only people doing the partying are the players not in the Super Bowl and a bunch of "BrOs" running this overly-hyped parties.

I'm officially over all this hype. The Super Bowl is one of the greatest sporting events in the world, not the greatest opportunity to rape a sport of its dignity. The Super Bowl is about the fans and the teams participating in it, and should not be taken advantage of by whores and douchebags who won't even watch the game. Give me back the days where The Super Bowl was a part of Football - not football being a part of the Super Bowl.

CAUTION: Venting

I hate the "in turn" arguement. As a Comment to the orginal Heisman post back in December I received a plea for Appy St. QB Amanti Edwards:

"Armanti Edwards is the Truth. He should win the Heisman, he's the best all around football player in the country. He handled Michigan, who in turn, handled Tib [ed. note: I assume he meant Tim here but I can't be positive] Tebow's Florida, what other proof do you need..."

So then by that thought process Arizona should have won the National Championship last year right? After all, Arizona beat Oregon, who beat Michigan, who beat Florida, who beat Kentucky, who beat LSU. Just send the trophy back to Tucson. Edwards is in a lower conference, it doesn't matter, there is not chance in hell that he would get enough votes to win. Just because a Sophomore won last year does not mean that all Heisman Voting rules will be thrown out. And for Tebow to win he had to have AMAZING numbers to over come the fact his team had 3 losses (up to that point, 4 total) and that he was a sophomore. For Edwards to win I'm thinking Tom Brady like numbers. Not to mention "The Truth" Edwards only had 17 passing TDs to 7 INTs. Albeit he did have 21 rushing TDs. But hell Joe Flacco had 23 passing TDs, and 4 rushing TDs to only 5 INTs and the only time anyone heard his name was at the Senior Bowl.

Why stop at Armanti Edwards though? Appy St. lost to Georgia Southern who lost to Chattanooga. You're right, take the Heisman from Tebow and ship it to Tennessee c/o Chattanooga Mocs QB Antonio Miller. Miller Quarterbacked the Mocs to a 2-9 (2-5) record with 13 TDs and 13 INTs, congrats Antonio.

2008 College Football Top 25 Preseason Rankings

*UPDATE* - This has since been updated. Click the "Top 25" at the bottom of this article for the most recent versions.

Some might say I'm crazy, I think I'm just informed. I released my Top 25 Heisman Candidates 3 days after the 2007 Winner was announced, and 2 days after Double D-Bow finished Thanking God and his acceptance speech. So the question remains, why has it taken me so long to put up my Top 25. The BCS Title game was weeks ago. I apologize for the delay and without further adieu, here it is your 2008 Top 25 team in College Football. In the interest of full disclosure I should tell you that it is rather extensive...and very long so make sure you're comfortable.

1. Georgia: They are tops among teams returning major talent. Matthew Stafford and Knowshon Moreno are top 10 Heisman Candidates in my book and look to cause some serious damage to opposing teams. And their Defense? They held a Hawaii team that averaged 46.16 PPG to only 10 pts, 7 of which coming late in the 4th quarter by a (keep a look out for this kid next year) Tyler Graunke TD pass. If they can stay healthy and avoid some of the offensive stalls (S. Carolina game last year Stafford was 19/44 passing) they are looking at the title game.
Schedule Hurdles: September 20 at Arizona State will be the first major test, both should be unbeaten when they meet in Tempe. Then of course the late season SEC match-ups at LSU and Auburn, Home against Tennessee and the Cocktail Party in Jacksonville vs. Florida.

2. Oklahoma: Bradford excelled last season, and he happened to be a True Freshman starting at the Quarterback for a Major College Football team. The loss of Malcolm Kelly as Bradford's target won't be easy to take, but for a QB who threw for 3121 yards and 36 TDs last season, I think it might be something they're able to overcome. Juaquin Iglesias was the team's top receiver last year, though less explosive than Kelly, and Fiesta Bowl standout (4 rec. 129 yds, TD) Quentin Chaney should step up. Also available, especially in the Red Zone is Jermaine Gresham, the 6'5" TE wrangled 11 TDs on 37 receptions. Where's Denny Green to tell us that all he does is catch Touchdowns. The Defense loses some key players, especially in the secondary, but this is Oklahoma, Bob Stoops does Defense and he does it well. Now only if he could win a Bowl Game.
Schedule Hurdles: September 6 Home vs. Cincinnati could be a hiccup and then of course the Texas game in early October (Dallas). They will also get Texas Tech and Kansas at home this year.

3. USC: One of the only things that could stand in USC's way this season is all of the talk surrounding Coach Pete Carroll listening to offers at the next level. Distractions of this caliber are rarely good for a program. Mark Sanchez and Mitch Mustain are both highly capable Trojan leaders and as I mentioned during the Rose Bowl, Joe McKnight scares the hell out of me and Staffon Johnson performed admirable last season at RB. They're Offensive backfield looks good, really good. They're losing a couple key offensive linemen but due to injuries last season they learned how to play without them a little bit and this year's starters got a little more game experience. You can never say enough about game experience especially on the Offensive Line, the game moves so fast. One of the biggest gaps to fill receiving, with the loss of Mackey Award winning Tight End Fred Davis. But they have some young talent ready and waiting as well as Arkansas transfer Damian Williams. Defensively they lose Sedrick Ellis (Whose draft stock is rising and I predicted him 4th before all of the increased focus) and they lose LB Keith Rivers, but should be able to contain and outscore their opponents.
Schedule Hurdles: Day 1 - January is basically a Schedule Hurdle. SC in my mind is playing one of if not the toughest schedule of anyone. They start @ Virginia, then Home for Ohio State then the next 7 games of Conference play present some challenges including Saturday October 25 in Tucson. Homecoming for Arizona. If you are unaware of my stance on playing the Kitty Kats at homecoming read this, (I was subsequently right of course) as well as look at the picture on the right side of the screen UA 52 UCLA 14 from a couple years ago, yet another homecoming upset. It's what we do, we dismantle top teams in October and then rush the field.

4. Florida: They got Double D-Bow trying to win back to back Bronze Stiff-Arms. They're leading rusher is also trying to win the BSA, of course that would be D-Bow as well. Which leads to my major concern with the Florida program. Their leading rushers were their QB and a WR. In fact D-Bow and WR Percy Harvin had 1559 of the teams 2602 yards and 29 of 39 rushing TDs. Harvin will be back and actually at this moment of thought has just replaced Ryan Mallet on my 2008 Heisman Candidate list. With Harvin and D-Bow making up all three parts of a triple threat offense, and USC transfer Emmanuel Moody waiting in the wings things look good for Florida offense. Defensively they should be better than last season (9 out of 11 starters last season were first-year starters) and experience should make them a step quicker and smarter.
Schedule Hurdles: The test for their Defense will come in week one vs. Hawaii, just because they lost Jones and Brennan, don't count out Hawaii, Graunke put up 10 TDs as a back-up last season. They get LSU and S. Carolina at home but travel to Tennessee and of course the World's Largest Cocktail party in J-Ville vs. GA.

5. The Ohio State University: Biggest loss might be in prospected 1st rounder DE Vernon Gholston. But the biggest off-season acquisition for Ohio State came in the form of James Laurinaits sticking around another year. QB Todd Boeckman and RB Chris "Beanie" Wells could be finalists for the BSA and should lead this offense well. The defense should be able to overcome the loss of Gholston and actually might be able to improve in the off-season. This is a team that wasn't supposed to accomplish what it did last season and was motivated to get back. Tressel might be able to push them into the BCS for an unprecedented 3rd straight appearance. Hopefully the tougher non-conference schedule this year and an improved Big Eleven will make for tougher tests and better play heading into it.
Schedule Hurdles: OSU will not only be playing USC but will be traveling out West on September 13 (which 4Real and I may be attending) to do it. They will follow that up with a trip back to the Horseshoe to play the Trojans again, this time the Trojans of Troy who had a moderately successful 2007 8-4 run, with a Bowl loss to FAU. As for Big Eleven play they'll sidestep Wisconisin but they will go on the road to Champaign to try and avenge the loss to the Illini last year. They will also be at home against Penn State and Michigan.

6. Mizzou: Double D attack of Daniel and Derrick Washington will have to make this a strong offensive team heading into '08, it looked more promising when Tony Temple was appealing his redshirt status for another season at Mizzou, but according to the AP yesterday, Temple has dropped his appeal and will not return to Missouri for a redshirt Sr. Season. Missouri still has Maclin as a target for Daniel but will miss TE target Martin Rucker. Offense should not be a problem with 2 Heisman worthy candidates in Daniel and Maclin and 10 defensive starters. Their incoming recruiting class isn't too bad so far either.
Schedule Hurdles: Ready to make a run from day one Mizzou plays host to Illinois in most likely the most competitive week one match-up we'll see in '08. Their Big XII schedule is pretty weak, other than a road trip to Texas and the neutral site Border Showdown with Kansas, which could allow for another trip to the Big XII Championship and a BCS bid, which they narrowly missed out on last year.

7. LSU: Defending champs lose a little ground, but more importantly lose a lot of talent. Offensive trio of Flynn, Terry Bradshaw's 2nd cousin Jacob Hester, and top WR prospect Early Doucet all are draft bound. They also lost thier Top DT, LB, and DB in prospected #1 pick and all everything Award Winner Glenn Dorsey, Ali Highsmith, and Thorpe Award runner-up (to Antoine Cason) Craig Steltz. They also will be losing D Coordinator Bo Pelini to Nebraska. These are MAJOR gaps to fill but Ryan Perrilloux might be able to eclipse what Flynn did judging by some of his 2007 bright spots. Keiland Williams should step up and get some good yardage and WRs Brandon LaFell and Demetrius Byrd should be nice targets for Perrilloux. A lot of things will have to fall into place perfectly to see LSU trying to repeat.
Schedule Hurdles: The Tigers face Troy in week 2 but it shouldn't be too difficult. The month of October could be a lot to overcome for these guys going on the Florida and South Carolina and then seeing Georgia in Baton Rouge. If they make it through that 3 game stretch without a loss, they should definitely be looking at a top BCS game and the SEC championship.

8. Texas: Colt McCoy was born and bred to be a Texas QB, and going into his Junior Season it's time to prove it. The Longhorns have been successful compared to most other teams in the last few years but not for Texas standards. Colt's turnovers, 18 INT in 2007 and 4 Fumbles in the Holiday Bowl (1 lost, 1 converted into a TX TD) are becoming a problem in Austin that needs to be resolved for success. Mack Brown is a damned good coach, and he wants to prove that his BCS win over USC a couple years ago was not only because of Vince Young (even though Vince did single handedly defeat the Trojans in one of the most amazing College Football performances ever.) Losing Jamaal Charles and Jermichael Finley will be tough for Texas to overcome, meaning more pressure on the shoulders of McCoy. This season will revolve completely around McCoy. A Heisman worth campaign should lead the team to a top record and possibly to the Big XII Championship.
Schedule Hurdles: Oct.11 Texas meets Oklahoma in Dallas for the Red River Shootout. A win there catapults this team into the driver's seat in the Big XII but tough road tests against Texas Tech and Kansas could end BCS chances in November.

9. West Virginia: We are entering into the Bill Stewart era in Morgantown and WVU is ready. The Loss of Slaton will not be easy to overcome, but Pat White coming back solidifies this offense and Noel Devine will be looking to impress but they won't have top Full Back Owen Schmitt back there to help carry the load. Bill Stewart did a nice job of focusing and preparing the players for the Fiesta Bowl, but will he be able to do it for an entire season. When WVU loses will comparisons be made to the Rodriguez led team of 2007. The loss of leading Receiver Darius Raynaud is not easy to overcome. 8 seems high for WV but the Big East doesn't look to be as competitive as last year so they should be able to have a pretty nice record.
Schedule Hurdles: Auburn in week one will be a daunting task and the difference between starting the season in the Top 15 and ending the season in the Top 15. A win almost ensures a bowl game since the rest of the schedule is rather soft and the only other hiccups are the rest of the Big East which WV looks to be distancing itself from.

10. Clemson: Someone from the ACC has to stand out and with the Hurricanes playing like the Orange Bowl looks it's not going to be Miami. Tommy Bowden has been making strides each year and '08 looks to be the year that he makes it into the Top 10 and possibly heading to a BCS game. Most of their Offensive weapons will be back, but most of their offensive line will not. That looks to be a serious spot for concern. It looks like most of the defensive starters will be back for '08 as well. And Top Recruit 5 Star DeQuan Bowers should make an immediate impact on the Defensive Line, plus he's a December Graduate which means he will have Spring Ball to learn a lot of the Defense. It's still early for some recruits but this is definitely one of the top recruiting classes in the country. 2008 will be a good year for Clemson, 2009 might be THE year for the Tigers.
Schedule Hurdles: S. Carolina at the end of November could be a good late season match-up, but the Tigers look to be the cream of the ACC crop. They'll have to go against Virginia, Florida State, and Wake which won't be walkaway victories but Clemson should be able to walkaway with the W.

11. Auburn: The Tigers had a good 2007 season which culminated in an overtime win against Clemson and an 8-4 record. The biggest questions surrounding Auburn's 2008 campaign are centered around replacing QB Brandon Cox with Sophomore Kodi Burns. This could be promising for Auburn with Cox's 13 INTs last season overshadowing his 9 TDs and 2000 yards as well as Burns' mobility. The Tigers also return top rushers Ben Tate and Brad Lester and top receivers Rodgeriqus Smith and Montez Billings. The even bigger questions though aren't suiting up in the fall. The coaching carousel went through Jordan Hare Stadium this off season with both Offensive and Defensive Coordinators leaving. Auburn stole away Troy's Tony Franklin to attempt to install the Spread in Alabama.
Schedule Hurdles: They start September on the Road up to Morgantown and the rest of September doesn't look much easier playing host to LSU and Tennessee. Wins in those games could mean that the November 15 game hosting Georgia could be one of the best games of 2008.

12. Wisconsin: If P.J. Hill can stay healthy he'll have the bulk of the carries for a Wisconsin team looking to improve. If he can't do it Smith and Brown proved they can filling in for Hill last season. Transfer Allan Evridge will be looking to get some PT replacing departed Tyler Donovan. TE Travis Beckum (no relation to Posh and Becks) will be returning and looking to add on to his two previous 900+ yd receiving seasons. The defense is going to have to prove it's muster in the Big Eleven and shut some teams down, relying on your offense in a shoot-out is typically not the way to win in the NCAA. They allowed over 21 PPG last season.
Schedule Hurdles: An early match-up with Fresno State is crying out for Fresno to have their first big win of the season and Wisconsin needs to hold up to have a successful 2008. Playing Michigan, Ohio State, Penn State, and Illinois in a 5 week span doesn't bode well for a team new to the pressure of Top 25, but luckily only Michigan is on the road during that stretch.

13. Texas Tech: This record setting offense is ready to show it's serious firepower. Unlike Wisconsin, this is a team that can play a shootout and win. They put up at LEAST 31 pts every single game last season and were over 40 8 of 12 games. Harrell's back and with his 5700 yds passing, and he's looking at 6000 this year potentially. Freshman phenom Michael Crabtree will be a Sophomore, and he will be double-teamed every game, but still could haul in 2000 yds receiving. RB Shannon Woods is back to help in the Red Zone (8 TDs last season). Plus the 5 guys who limited Harrell's time on the turf are all returning aiming to drop those sacks down from 16. As I mentioned the defense is more of an afterthought here, but they will be strong on D returning 8 Starters.
Schedule Hurdles: Late season Big XII contests look to be in the way going to Kansas in October, hosting Texas the following week, and heading to Oklahoma on the 15th of November.

14. Kansas: Surprised everyone in the world with their run last season losing once in the regular season. Of course they played one of the weakest schedules in all of College Football so when they beat Va. Tech in the Orange Bowl they opened some eyes. QB Todd Reesing will be returning and looking to improve on last season's coming out party in which he threw for 33 TD and 7 INT. They are losing leading rusher Brandon McAnderson, but back-up Jake Sharp fared well last season, and Reesing isn't afraid to use his legs either. On Defense 9 of 11 starters will be returning. People will be gunning for the Jayhawks this year and it's time to show if last year was a fluke or not.
Schedule Hurdles: Their non-conference doesn't get much harder than last season but they will be playing at South Florida in Mid-September. This year they drew the tough road through the Big XII having to visit Oklahoma and end the season with back to back home games against Texas and Mizzou.

15. VT: VT is looking to rebound off a slightly down emotional 2007 season and loss in the Orange Bowl. Starting QB Glennon is back, and dual threat back-up Tyrod Taylor is too. RB Brendan Ore will be looking for his first 1000 yd season in his Sr. yr. The biggest hit felt in Blacksburg is the loss of their Top 4 receivers, that's about 2000 yds and 15 TDs from last season that won't be back, or the equivalent of 1 Michael Crabtree. They're losing 6 starting Defensive standouts including LB Xavier Adibi.
Schedule Hurdles: This season is a good year to have to rebuild a little bit. Road games to Nebraska and Florida State and a home game against Virginia look to be the only possible major struggles the Hokies face, at least until possibly meeting Clemson in the ACC Championship.

16. Arizona State: Surprised many last season firing out of the gates to one of their best starts in the last decade, but 2008 doesn't look to repeat such success. Sure Scum Devils are among the top 3-4 teams in the Pac-10 but they're losing RB Ryan Torain and Incoming backstabber/RB Ryan Bass won't likely make an immediate impact in Tempe. We saw a lot of ASU's weaknesses come out in their Holiday Bowl loss to Texas, beaten in almost every facet of the game. The bright spot is the return of QB Rudy Carpenter for his Sr. Season, Keegan Herring will likely become the every down back and most of the receiving corps will still be around. The defense will get hit, but it should be able to recover for a successful season. Rather than being disappointed with a Holiday Bowl berth as they were last year, it looks as if the Devils should be excited for the bid.
Schedule Hurdles: The Devils will start out slow but their 4th game against Georgia could be one of the top games of the year. That starts a 5 game stretch where the Devils will have to be playing their best, going on the road to Cal and SC, playing host to Oregon then heading up to Corvalis.

17. Oregon: No Dixon, No Stewart, how could the Ducks possibly be # 17 especially after finished 23/24 in the polls last season. Well unless the Sun Bowl was a mirage, incoming QB Justin Roeper is ready to heal the wounds in Eugene of the what could have been 2007 squashed on the 37 yard-line at Arizona Stadium in Tucson. Jeremiah Johnson should be ready to go this fall after rehabbing his ACL injury that kept him out of the last 7 games last season. They're going to have to shore up their defensive interior to compete, but I think they've got the talent to do it. The return of Safety Patrick Chung should help the Oregon defense immensely.
Schedule Hurdles: Games at Purdue and home against Boise State highlight the non-conference schedule for the Ducks who then must go through the top to bottom improved Pac-10.

18. BYU: Quite simply they've been making noise, and are finally ready to be heard. After back to back double digit win seasons and bowl berths they are ready to get some recognition from day one. The defense was impacted a little bit but the offense will remain almost perfectly in tact. Expect incoming True Freshmen Uona Kaveinga to make an immediate impact in Provo. In another case of mid-major supremacy don't be surprised to see BYU going to another bowl this year and getting a little more attention.
Schedule Hurdles: Sticking with their history of scheduling Pac-10 teams they will be heading to Washington but more importantly will be hosting UCLA. The only tough conference game they're going to see will be at Air Force in the second to final week of the season.

19. Penn State: The Nittany Lions are ready for 2008 and should be competitive within the Big Eleven. The things separating them from OhSt and Wisc are minimal and a couple wins in those games would move the JoePas higher in the Top 25 for sure. They lost QB Anthony Morelli who was a good team leader and QB and as much as they'll miss his 2651 yds they won't miss his 2:1 TD to INT ratio. Daryll Clark will have the pressure on him since he will be leading a team where almost every other starter has been there before and he hasn't . The defense will be key for the '08 JoePas.
Schedule Hurdles: Non-Conference should be a cake walk with only visiting Oregon State being worhty of a little worry, but PSU should get by them. With Home games against Illinois and Michigan and Road games against Wisconsin and Ohio State being the true tests.

20. Illinois: Juice Williams is back, so is Eddie McGee. Rashard Mendenhall is not. If Juice can cut the INTs, a lot, they should be able to adjust. Especially with the Rose Bowl defeat showing us how much they relied on Mendenhall. Illinois can continue to build on last season's success and Zook's coaching or fall back down to middle of the Big Eleven. Zook is, and always has been a great recruiter and last season's Rose Bowl run has helped him immensely. Williams will be the Veteran leader, and will be leading a lot of young, raw, talent out to the field. If they can finish in the Top 25 consider it a good year for the Illini since it's potentially a rebuilding year. And look out for 2009, Juice's Senior year. This year's Illini could be the definition of one year away.
Schedule Hurdles: Labor Day weekend and "The Arch Rivalry" game with Mizzou will be a big challenge and set the tone for 2009. After that it's clear sailing until they play the rest of the Big Eleven.

21. Tennessee: Erik Ainge is gone and the success of the 2008 Volunteers lies on the shoulders of Jonathon Crompton or one of two back-up Sophomore's who never saw the field last year. There aren't any QB's coming in yet in this year's recruits so the position is a little thin. RB Arain Foster had a successful scope job last week and will be ready by spring. RB Montario Hardesty isn't a scrub either and will get help carry the load that will be ground heavy. Lucas Taylor will be a down field target at times and he will lead the receiving corps. Two question marks are the recent off field issues that have been facing the program and whether or not their defense will be able to tighten up a little bit and limit the PPG (after allowing 23 last season).
Schedule Hurdles: Mid season stack up of Florida, at Auburn and at Georgia, then a lesser test against S. Carolina a couple weeks later.

22. Virginia: Cavaliers Defense limiting Texas Tech to 31 points was no small feat. It was the fewest points the Rebs put on the board all season. The only major loss from that defense is top pick Chris Long. Most of their offense is coming back as well as getting back top receiver Kevin Ogletree who missed 2007 with a knee injury as well as RB Cedric Peerman who had 585 yds in 5.5 games. Especially in the weak ACC Virginia could surprise and contend with Clemson and Va Tech.
Schedule Hurdles: Clemson at home and at Va Tech look to be the only real challenges. Unless Florida State or Wake step-up.

23. Michigan: The Rodriguez era is officially beginning and TENTATIVELY I'm putting Michigan in here, of course they don't have a QB right now but are heavily recruiting Terrell Pryor, the nation's top recruit. On record in more than a few places is the already possible questionaly recruiting in Ann Arbor with the pictures of Pryor and a Corvette surfacing. With Mallet gone it really is Pryor or nothing in Ann Arbor. No Henne, No Manningham, no Arrington, no Hart, no Long, and some defensive losses to might have Michigan falling out of the Top 25 early, and not returning at all. Already the pre-season no.5 in the Big Eleven. This could be worse than last year's loss to Appy State. It's a clean state for Coach Rod, we'll have to see if leaving Morgantown was worth it.
Schedule Hurdles: Luckily for the Wolverines they don't play games on the road ever with Notre Dame the master of futility Michigan officially doesn't play a challenging out of conference game but Wisconsin, Illinois, and Penn State in a 4 week span has the Wolverines lucky to be 2-2 when it's done.

24. S. Carolina: Could be a good season for the Gamecocks and Spurrier after last seasons 6-6 (0-5 in the last 5) epic collapse look for a resurgent 2008 team. Will be overshadowed by the rest of the SEC but as a curse also being a blessing, this gives them ample opportunity to tumble one of the SEC golliaths and move up the rankings. That 6-1 record last year was not a complete fluke and they just need to avoid the complacency. We all know Spurrier is a hell of a recruiter and we'll see more of his recruits take the field this year.
Schedule Hurdles: One of the toughest schedules we'll see full of names like Georgia, LSU, Tennessee, Florida and Clemson gives lots of opportunites for upsets.

25. Fresno State: Tim Brandstater will have the stage to show those on the west coast his talents, and RB Ryan Matthews looks to build on a outstanding Freshman season. We have had a WAC team go to a BCS game in the past 2 seasons. It's not going to be Boise State or Hawaii. Most likely it won't be Fresno State either, but they look to be the class of the WAC right now. And even though it's a mid-major, being the best in a conference usually gets some votes and garners some attention.
Schedule Hurdles: Tough opener at UCLA could detour the Bulldogs hopes at a Top 25 season, and Wisconsin visiting a couple weeks later only makes it harder. From there on out they're in conference play and should hold up against most other WAC teams.

Just missing the cut are Pitt, South Florida, Wake, Arizona, Cal, and UCLA (with the addition of Norm Chow).

That's it for now feel free to Comment or e-mail me if you think I'm wrong. These will likely change after Spring Ball but who knows.

*UPDATE* - This has since been updated here.

MLB Free Agency: Time to Make Your Team a Contender

We’re about fifteen days away from pitchers and catchers reporting and that means it’s time to make that push for the remaining free agent gems. The biggest blockbuster so far is the Mets signing Johan Santana from the Minnesota Twins. Santana turned down an extension from the Twins worth $80 million over the next four years. Instead Santana will get his $13.25 million for next year while in negotiation for a contract extension that will reportedly earn him $20 million a year for four to seven years. The Twins get four prospects in exchange for Santana’s two Cy Young awards.

  • OF Carlos Gomez
  • RHP Phil Humber
  • RHP Delois Guerra
  • RHP Kevin Mulvey

Twin Rebuild. Mets Contend.

Bonus Free Agency Knowledge:

In case you didn’t know or were too scared to ask.
Free Agency works like this: Free Agent players are ranked by a number of statistical categories by the Elias Sports Bureau and broken up into Type A and Type B. Type A players are the top 20% at their position while B are the next 20%. When a deal happens with a Type A free agent the team signing the player must give up their first round pick in the draft to the team losing said player. The losing team also receives a pick in a special round between the first and second rounds called the sandwich round. Those who give up a Type B player do not receive a first round pick, but are awarded a pick in the sandwich round. The only exception is for teams who currently have a top 15 pick in the draft. If they were to sign a Type A player they would give up their second round pick instead of their first.

I’ve been looking over who the top free agents left on the market are, and should be posting predictions and speculations on where they should end up in the next day or so. You have no idea how much I missed baseball.

Farewell Coach Smith

Larry Smith (1939-2008)

Former Arizona head coach Larry Smith died early today after a long battle with leukemia at the age of 68. He led the Wildcats from 1980-1986 posting a 48-28-3 record. His resume included an 8-3-1 record in 85' that resulted in a Sun Bowl tie and an 86' team that went 9-3 and earned an Aloha Bowl Victory. Our condolences go out to the Smith family. Larry you will be missed.

Happy Monday

Hey all hope you had a nice weekend.

As for the new layout, the all-black was starting to ruin my eyes so I opted to update, let us know what you think, if you hate it tell us, we strive to make you happy.

First off for all of you out there who have been responding negatively to the prediction of Jimmy Clausen as a Heisman hopeful, please read the discourse between myself and 4Real in the comment section of my Heisman preview, part 2. That will explain why I put Clausen in the running, and how I don't think he has a shot, but the fact that he is the only name anyone outside of South Bend knows that plays for Notre Dame that's reason enough. There is a pro-Golden Domers bias in the media, and I think we all know this.

Since the Super Bowl talk has been at a minimum around here I figured I would update you on my favorite story of Super Bowl season thusfar. It comes to us from the East Valley Tribune and it's a heartwarming story about former Scum Devil current Giant Guard Grey Ruegamer. Apparently he learned a lot while playing in Tempe. For some reason, no part of that story surprises me.

I hope this ankle thing blows up in Belichick's face. Keeping Brady out of practice, making sure he walks around in a boot, just to stir the media and in turn try to confuse the Giants. I would love it if the mastermind went too far with this one and a rusty Brady throws a pick 6 on the first drive.

According to more than a few published reports Andre Woodson didn't impress anyone in Mobile this weekend. Almost every recap of the Senior Bowl has Woodson slipping in favor of Delaware upstart QB Joe Flacco. So much for Chicago fans who were looking at taking Flacco in the 2nd round, it doesn't appear he'll still be around come pick 45.

A little more College Football/Draft talk for you. Go ahead and Call me a Homer but Spencer Larsen, the Stormin Mormon LB from Arizona is sneaking up a few draft boards and has some serious surprise potential for a lot of teams out there. They just don't know it yet. Currently he's moved up to a late 6th early 7th round projection in a lot of reports (at season's end he was a late 7th-Free Agent in most reports) and looks to be moving up higher. The East-West Shrine Game Defensive MVP put together a solid career at Arizona but was overshadowed by an underperforming team. He finished his career with 312 Tackles (209 solo) 32 for loss, 5 FF, 8 FR, 2 INT, 12 Passes Defended, and 9 sacks. His Senior season was his best to date with 131 tackles (87 solo) 15.5 for loss, 3 FF, 4 FR, 1 INT, 5 PD, and 4 Sacks. To add to that he was a 1st team Pac-10 selection and a 2nd team All-American. He quietly put together a rather nice career and could be a steal somewhere in the draft. He is a serious hard-worker.

Charlie Weis: Smartest Man Alive or Dumb Luck

Is Charlie Weis a Recruiting Guru? Everyone questioned whether he would be able to recruit on the collegiate level. Yet after the most recent collapse ND still has one of the top recruiting classes of 2008, so far. Could Charlie Weis have planned this? Could the dismal 2007 Falterin' Irish could have been a complete ruse, used to decieve the many. Think about it, everyone knew Notre Dame was not going to compete in the 2007 season. Too much talent gone to graduation. Weis was looking at years of being a mid-level school fighting with other schools for top recruits only to be beaten by teams playing in the Bowls. So he struck a genius plan:

Take the most storied program in College Football history and make them a laughing stock. Do everything in your power to have the worst season in franchise history. And then here's the recruiting pitch:

A few years ago Notre Dame was great, most storied and known tradition in the NCAA, the Four Horsemen, the countless pros who played in Touchdown Jesus' shadow, the stockpile of post-season accolades. Hell there are at least 5 movies made in and around Notre Dame football. One of them was even starring a future US President. Then, in a stroke of recruiting mastermind, instead of hide the teams terrible 2007 performance, use it as a pitch.

Imagine this, you've been playing football your whole life. Before you had cable you were watching Notre Dame on Saturdays (due to their NBC Monopoly). You always dreamed of playing at one of the power-houses and Notre Dame's faceman Charlie Weis shows up. He's wearing his Super Bowl rings, dropping names like Brady Quinn and Tom Brady, reminding these recruits of what Notre Dame football is and what he has accomplished. Then, slightly ashamed, mentions the recent slip into a terrible time, but offers these top recruits a once in a lifetime offer. Help make the once great program on hard times, become the greatest of all time.

As a recruit, you know you're getting national exposure. A 6 win season after 2007 and you're in contention for awards. 8 Wins and you're guaranteed a Bowl game, and it's not gonna be the Brut Sun Bowl. Your name will go down in history as one of the greats to play at one of the greatest schools and you helped bring Notre Dame back to glory.

It's a genius move. This is a man who coached under the evil mastermind of Bill Belichick. Remember? What's next sweatshirts?

Of course this is absolutely ridiculous to think that Weis would intentionally damage a program for a recruiting pitch. It is just pure dumb luck that he landed this group of top recruits. Isn't it?

LeSean McCoy, RB - Pitt
Why: Carried the load as a True Freshman last year, Dual Threat capabilities

Why Not: Plays at Pitt, Will get the same attention as Rutgers Ray Rice, not enough

2007: The only number that matters, 1. Amount of Heisman's won last season.
Why Not: Matt Leinart Factor. Being deserving does not guarantee a 2nd Heisman. Voters aren't big fans of dual winners

2007: 247 Att, 1609 yds, 15 TD, 0 Fumbles in 2 years
Why Not: Ohio State's offense doesn't draw the attention to Columbus, if Boeckman can't get it done, it's on Beanie.

2008 - 2009 Heisman Candidates

With the list of those entering the NFL Draft in a few months finalized we can now sit back and look at the possible/probable Heisman Candidates for the 2008-2009 season. For a Background here is my first foray into the field of likely Bronze Stiff Arm Finalists on their quest to strike the Reverse Desmond. (In case you wonder why I call it the "Reverse Desmond, it has to do with the fact that Howard sticks he Left arm out and Left leg forward, while the Bronze Stiff Arm is the Right arm out and Right leg forward. It's the details people. Anyway due to my expansive knowledge of College Football as well as Heisman Voting Procedures I can tell you all why my Top 25 could be the next, and why they most likely won't. Since it helps me get through the day (and since I go home in 15 minutes) I'm going to break this up similarly to how I broke up the NFL Draft columns. Why Not: Late in the game carries, yards, defeated teams, we'll see what he can do as #1

Graham Harrell, QB - Texas Tech
Why: Insane Numbers throwing to Crabtree, passing offense, has all the tools.
2007: 512/713 5705 yds, 48 TD 14 INT

Why: Performed well as a True Freshman thrust into the spotlight on a Michigan team constantly in the spotlight (repetition intentional)
2007: 61/141, 892 yds, 7 TD, 5 INT
Why Not: Rich Rodriguez spread? Terrell Pryor? 5 INT to only 7 TD

UPDATE: Refer to the bottom of part 2 where 4Real points out that I'm an idiot. Rather than try to cover it up, I admit my mistake and cross it off without altering it in any other way, narrowing the field to 24. As I have said before, I am an idiot, please do not forget this.

Colt McCoy, QB - Texas
Why: Texas QB, his name is Colt McCoy for heaven's sake.
2007: 276/424 3,303 yds, 22 TD, 18 INT

Conan vs. Colbert

First off, yes I know I have been posting a lot of videos recently and some of you are looking for honest, unbiased, in depth, good hearted Sports reporting here. OK all joking aside, I was planning on not posting any more videos due to the fact that I have posted a lot in the last couple weeks. With that said, I came across this and it was too priceless not to pass on to my loyal readers. If you like Conan O'Brien, Stephen Colbert, Chuck Norris, Mike Huckabee, or any combination of them you will appreciate this. I guarantee this or your money back. As I mentioned in a past article, Stephen Colbert might be responsible for Gov. Huckabee's recent political climb, apparently Conan O'Brien has something to say about it.

College Football: Post Season Awards Don't Always Add Up

What is the perfect ending to a college football season dominated by upsets? How about crowning the first underclassmen in the Heisman’s storied history. Tim Tebow becomes the first sophomore to ever have his named etched on the bronze stiff arm, but does the mythical image created by the media really live up to what the trophy has historically represented?

The issue becomes whether or not the media has influenced the award to the point where it no longer holds the same prestige. The media has undoubtedly placed the Heisman in a league of its own in terms of prestige, but how do the other top honors predict its winner?

Breakdown of Top Honors in College Football:

Tier 1:
The Heisman Memorial Trophy: Awarded to Nation’s Most Outstanding Player (Dates back to 1935)
Voting: United States is split into six regions each of which contains 145 media votes. Each previous winner also has votes as well as one going to the public. Every ballot works on a point system assigning 3 points for first, 2 for second, 1 for third.

Tier 2:
Maxwell Award: Awarded to College Football’s Player of the Year (Dates back to 1937)
Voting; All members of the Maxwell Football Club have the right to place their vote for this and many other awards. What does that mean? For $35 a year or $750 for life you too can vote.

Walter Camp Award: Awarded to College Football’s Player of the Year (Dates back to 1967)
Voting: Done by what appears to be an exclusive group of 20 members that oversee the foundation and thus become eligible to vote. A small $25,000 dollar annual fee is all you’ll need for this privilege.

Tier 3:
Doak Walker Award: Awarded to Nation’s Top Running Back (Dates back to 1990)
Voting: Run by SMU. Ten semifinalist are voted on by the the SMU Athletic Forum Board of Directors who send that list to a National Selection Committee for the Award the cast votes for three finalists and then again for a winner. This panel is made up for Media and former All Americans and All Pro players. You can see the list here

Davey O’Brien Award: Awarded to Nation’s Best Quarterback (Dates back to 1981)
Voting: A selection of Media personalities and past winners. New this year is the addition of the fan vote which takes the public’s top three picks into the semi finals and adds 5% to their total votes during the voting for finalists and the winner.
Selection Committee List

Now that we’ve run down the awards lets take at some history of the winners and how the other four awards influence who wins the Heisman.

Three Resumes to Keep in Mind:
Tebow is the first underclassmen to ever win the Heisman. He played on a team that went 9-4 and landed 16th in USA Today Poll, 13th in the AP poll, and 12th in the BCS standings. He currently has two more years of eligibility left and has made numerous comments about graduating being the most important thing to him and his family… inferring he won’t leave early.

Tebow also won the Maxwell and O’Brien Awards.

Archie Griffin is the only player to ever win the Heisman twice (1974 & 75). 1974 saw them as co-champions of the Big Ten while in 1975 they won outright. Both years they lost in the Rose Bowl ending with records of 10-2 and 11-1 respectively.

Grffin won the Walter Camp both years and the Maxwell in 75.

Darren McFadden became only the second player in Heisman history to be named runner up twice without winning the award. Glenn Davis took second honors in 1944 and 45 before winning it in 46, however, with McFadden declaring for the draft that stat is solidified. He also becomes the second player to ever win the Doak Walker Award Twice ( 2006 and 07). Ricky Williams did it (1997 and 98) before adding the Heisman to his resume later on in 1998.

McFadden’s total: Walter Camp 07, Doak Walker 06 and 07, no Heisman.

What does this mean?
Starting at 1990 from the conception of the Doak Walker Award the Breakdown looks like this:

1990-2007 (18 Seasons)
13 players winning the Walter Camp Award won the Heisman

7 players had won the Doak and the Walter Camp. Five of those players went on to win the Heisman ( McFadden becomes the 2nd player not to)
• Larry Johnson was the first without winning the Heisman even though he brought home the Walter Camp, Doak Walker, and the Maxwell.

9 Players have won both the Maxwell and the O’Brien: Five went on to win the Heisman. Jason White won both in 04’ but won his Heisman in 03’ with just an O’Brien.

Like I had written in a previous article, the Heisman is inconsistent. At one point or another the talent portrayed by these athletes was rewarded. Slighting McFadden in this years Heisman race was worse than what Larry Johnson endured in 2002 in which he didn’t even finish second in the Heisman race. This is during the same year that he took home the other three most prestigious awards (Brad Banks takes the O’Brien and Runner Up position to Carson Palmer for the Heisman). It comes down to the issue that first the media won’t let him win it because he is a sophomore, the next you tell me that it was because his team wasn’t good enough. Arkansas finished with an 8-5 record, 3rd in SEC West with a conference record of 4-4 and lost in the Cotton Bowl to Missouri who finished fourth in the AP Poll. Instead you are going to give it to a sophomore whose team went 9-4 and sat third in SEC East with a 5-3 record. To top it off Florida with Tebow behind the helm lost in the Capital One Bowl to a Michigan team who was 18th in the final AP vote.

McFadden Deserved the Heisman. Take nothing away from a stellar individual effort from Tebow but were we ready to put him in place to join Griffin as the only two time winner, or God Forbid let him stand a top as a three time winner solidifying the mythical stature the media has created for him.

2008 NFL Mock Draft Update 1-31

Here's the newest, and final installment of my (pre-combine) version of the 2008 NFL Mock Draft. As always catch up on the past installments here:

Picks 1-6

Picks 7-12

Edited/Updated Top 12 PLUS and additional pick.

Picks 14-20

First the Top 20 again:

1. Miami - Glenn Dorsey, DT - LSU
2. St. Louis - Chris Long, DE - Virginia
3. Atlanta - Darren McFadden, RB - Arkansas
4. Oakland - Sedrick Ellis, DT - USC
5. KC - Jake Long, OT - Michigan
6. NYJ - Ryan Clady, OT - Boise State
7. New England - Dan Connor, LB - Penn State
8. Baltimore - Matt Ryan, QB - Boston College
9. Cincinnati - Vernon Gholston, DE - Ohio State
10. New Orleans - Mike Jenkins, CB - South Florida
11. Buffalo - Brian Brohm, QB - Louisville
12. Denver - Kenny Phillips, S - Miami
13. Carolina - Andre Woodson, QB - Kentucky
14. Chicago - Sam Baker, OT - USC
15. Detroit - Jonathon Stewart, RB - Oregon
16. Arizona - Derrick Harvey, DE - Florida
17. Minnesota -Early Doucet, WR - LSU
18. Houston - Rashard Mendenhall, RB - Illinois
19. Philidelphia - DeSean JAckson, WR - California
20. Tampa Bay - Antoine Cason, CB - Arizona

Now the Updated/Amendmended Top 20.

17. Minnesota - Instead of Early Doucet the Nordics look out west for WR help. As I said last time DeSean Jackson is DANGEROUS and would be a steal at 19. He'd still be a steal at 17 and that's where I think he'll fall.

19. Philidelphia - With Jackson off the board the Iggles are still looking WR and just because he slipped a couple spots does not make him any less dangerous. LSU WR Early Doucet looks just as good here as he did at 17 last week. I think this one is a no brainer. Instead of picking a new QB to threaten your starter, why not get a quality Receiver to help him out.

20. Tampa Bay - As of recently Kansas CB Aqib Talib is moving up many draft boards as a top DB prospect I think he might eeke ahead of Cason come April. Also, I kind of fear that putting Cason that high was a slightly more emotional choice being that I love the guy. He's working out down in Florida right now so don't be surprised to see what he can accomplish at the Combine.

Now for 21-31:

Skins - Nelson Miller's pride and joy from the nation's capital is looking to improve on a playoff run. What to do? Protect Todd Collins/Jason Campbell and open up some running lanes for Clinton Portis. The answers being either Pitt OL Jeff Otah or Vandy OL Chris Williams. I think Williams has a slight edge right now, we'll have to see how many of the Trident Saloon faithful cheer on either of these welcome additions.

'Boys - The Cowboys are looking at 2 things in the first round, a WR and a CB. I think they're going CB here and it will be the aforementioned CB from Arizona, Antoine Cason. Now if Tampa goes for Cason then Talib will fit nicely here as well. Judging by my board though, Talib is gone, and Cason is heading to Dallas.

Stillers - Mike Tomlin's innaugural season in Pitt actually went pretty well, with the exception of that one call, I think you all know which one I'm talking about, vs. the Jags, you know. The Stillers are actually in pretty good shape, but it wouldn't hurt to bolster the Defensive Line a little bit. Enter UNC DT Kentwan Balmer. He's a good fit for the Burgh's defensive schemes.

Music City - The former home of the original "Miracle" in the NFL (I'm talking to you Kitna) is looking to continue to build on a successful season. Vince Young is doing his thing but his passing yards are not where they should be. LenDale White is doing well and the running game in Tennessee is deep enough, but who does Vince have to throw to? Mike Williams has been a bust, Eric Moulds has been hanging around for over a decade but isn't the same threat he once was, and Bears cast-off Justin Gage has been less than impressive in the last 5 years. It could be former teammate Limas Sweed from Texas who missed the last half of his Senior season, and Oklahoma WR Malcolm Kelly. I'm leaning Kelly here, but we'll have to see how Sweed has bounced back from wrist surgery. Watch Texas' # 2 all-time TD receptions to see how much he has lost being on the shelf for the last 6 months.

Hawks - Seattle looked good this year, just like the past few, but coming up short. One big reason is the lack of a running game. Shaun Alexander doesn't break tackles like he once did, instead he crumbles to the turf on first contact. Having a running back with him will either inspire him to run harder, give him breathers, or will become the featured back. I think the perfect addition to share time as well as be a VERY capable running back is Arkansas RB Felix Jones.

Jags - Jack Del Rio is finally making some moves in J-Ville after a few years adjusting to the head coaching position. Jacksonville had a good run this year, especially in the latter half of the season. Fred Taylor is heading to his first Pro Bowl and Jacksonville was beyond competant this year. I think they bolster the D-Line a little bit and look for DE from Miami Calais Campbell to do the job.

Bolts - After a tough loss last weekend where they just couldn't convert on the Pats defense, when Brady looked human (3 Picks) the Chargers are in good position. They made some strides under Norv Turner this year, and went through some growing pains in the first half of the season. Look for a surprise pick up here of Reggie Smith, CB - Oklahoma. He will be a solid fit for San Diego and has some serious athletic upside.

Boys - Assuming, as I did, Dallas goes Corner with the 22nd pick by the time pick 28 rolls around they will be looking WR. I think they stay in state and pick up the Texas WR Limas Sweed, assuming he's still on the board. I think he's the top WR left at the end of the 1st round and would be a better target for Bromo than Clayton.

Niners - The Niners need a lot of help and having that # 7 pick would have worked out very nicely for them, unfortunately for the San Fran faithful their pick is slightly lower in the draft order and they look to pick up Auburn DT Pat Sims. By this point of the draft though let's be honest at most I have 9 picks above right and someone will be pulling the Quinn/Leinart free-fall, I mean can you say Adrian Peterson with 7 and Ted Ginn Jr. with 9. These are just educated guesses at this point. But if everything were to fall into place ahead of SF like they have in my make believe draft, look for Pat Sims' name to be called.

Cheeseheads - The Pack made a tremendous turn-around this season making it to the NFC Championship and only losing to the Bears twice, and someone else once. I had a point here. Oh, Ryan Grant proved to be an asset, and there really aren't a lot of recievers left worthy of a 1st round pick. I think they go Defense and they bolster the LBs. Keith Rivers LB from USC could help out Hawk right about here, and he would possibly be the best pick of the draft of anyone outside of the top 3. The one downside is he played at USC which has been known to add a little too much to your draft resume without 100% panning out, at least on the defenive side of the ball. He could be looking like a great pick up right here specifically because of his Maroon and Gold Wardrobe.

G-Men - The resurgent Giants who continue to play the role of surprising underdog led by underdog leader Eli Manning will have the last pick in the 1st round win or lose. The Patriots lost their pick due to the fact that they got caught cheating to start of this Magical* Super Bowl run. Anyways, the Giants looked pretty good and have built a solid team, particularly on the Defensive Line, and chemistry is at an all-time high in New York riding on the aforementioned underdog card. I think they look to improve their DBs a little bit and look to long shot CB Leodis McKelvin from Troy. McKelvin's two biggest downsides are the fact that Troy didn't play wnough good competition to warrant 1st round consideration, and that his first name is Leodis, seriously.

Look for a new draft update after the Combine and All-Star games are over. And don't be surprised to see a midnight alteration on or around Friday the 25th of April for a finalized projection where I will most likely say the Falcons take Matt Ryan because the pressure will be too much on them to take a QB despite the fact that McFadden is a superior talent.

As always to catch up on my past draft prognostications

Farve's Fountain Finaly Finishes

Sorry, I really love alliteration.

As I wrote before here don't be fooled. Brett Favre (from here on spelled phonetically as Farve) is not as rejuvanated as he appears. It's the first time in a few seasons that he has had half decent receivers the throw to and a running game that works to open up a passing game. His numbers improved and he looked like the second coming of Brett Farve. As I have been saying for years Brett Farve is one of the top Quarterbacks of the last 15 years. He is one of the top quarterbacks of all time, and is he a hall of famer, he would get my unbiased vote. I think he is top 25 for sure. Top 10 on the other hand I do not. This has less to do with my hatred for the Packers than it does the numbers, and they are quite simple. Brett Farve made a career out of beating up on lesser teams.

The NFC conference formerly known as the NFC Central, of which my beloved Bears belong, has been pretty damned weak over the last 15 years, and Farve made it his duty to show just how bad those teams were by constantly, continutally, and anually defeating them. Brett Farve was a good quarterback that looked better compared to his surroundings. It's that simple. He is one of the WORST game managing signal-callers of all-time. He tries to make big plays out of nothing and more often than not they cost him. People laud Farve as a gunslinger, ummmm that shouldn't be a compliment. Yeah throwing the hell out of the ball 75 yards down field is a talent and a way to make a living as a quarterback. Unfortunately for him, sometimes you're playing against better DBs and better Defenses and they pick you apart waiting for you to make that boneheaded move. And they know you will. They sit back and wait for it, because it will happen and they just hope their DB can make the play. Case and point Sunday's 2 INT performance for the aforementioned Big-Game Brett.

To Paraphrase my earlier article about this:
"Big Game Brett” in the last decade does not have the most amazing numbers especially in the post season. In fact since the Cheeseheads won Super Bowl XXXI after the 1996 season Brett really has barely been average let alone a Hall of Fame caliber quarterback. In the year following their SB XXXI victory, Green Bay lost to the Broncos in Farve’s 2 Turnover performance leading to 10 Denver Points. Since then there haven’t been a whole lot of high points for Brett...
Without going into too much detail, entering this post-season he has 16 TDs 19 INTs 5 Fumbles and 2 lost since Green Bay's Super Bowl Win."

This year's resurgent 3TD game vs. The Seahawks and his 2/2 performance Sunday even him out at 21TDs and 21INTs in the post-season over the last decade. Big game players show up big for big games.

What's the point? Well it's actually quite simple. Brett Farve is one of the top QBs of all time but someone for the love of God cover him for what he truly is. A Gambler, Risktaker, Gunslinger who has cost his team more big games than won, especially over the last decade. He's getting old and he doesn't have the arm he had 10 or even 5 years ago, and when he chucks it into a crowd of off-color jerseys things don't go well for him. For the sake of his image, take this gift of 2007 comeback player/MVP Candidate/Post-season run and go out on a high note. If he's waiting for a Super Bowl, he's gonna be waiting a long time. It's not the end of the world, he just doesn't have it anymore, and the sooner he realizes it the better for Green Bay. He's only the 45th best QB with at least 300 completions as far as Pass/Interception Percentage, the 51st best QB with Pass/TD Percentage, has the 3rd most fumbles and most INTs in a career. Go out while you're still near the top.

Of course I don't mind him sticking around to play the Bears every year, he's averaging 4.3 picks per game the last 3 years. Plus he's got a few fumbles to his credit over the same period.

Quick Post

Hope you all had a nice/relaxing/fun whatever 3-day weekend. The best thing about 3 days weekends has to be the shortened work week. And I'm not saying that in a Duh factor kind of way. I mean the day off is obviously nice, but far better I think is the fact that one only has to be at work for 4 days. And yes I know how stupid it sounds but anyways here's for a quick update.

Back-to-back Manning trips to the Super Bowl. If "Peyton" Eli shows up this could be an interesting game seeing how well they played the Pats a few weeks ago. Unfortunately if "Cooper" Eli shows up it will certianly be curtains on the G-Men.

Tom Brady is in a walking cast after "injuring" himself Sunday. The only thing injured should be his holier than thou ego after throwing 3 picks against the Bolts. And of course his fashion sense, visiting a Brazilian Bikini Model in shabby jeans and a sweatshirt with flowers in hand is quite a statement. I guess he's learning more by the day from the Hooded/Evil Genius Belicheck.

Speaking of Belicheck and the walking cast, I hope no one in New York is being psyched out by this at all. Brady has been listed as "Probable" or "Questionable" every week since Belicheck took over. No one is buying the Patriots injury report anymore.

Speaking of injury reports, yes it's true that LdT probably could have played Sunday, but he is 100% right when he said that he could have played but why would he. No he wasn't being selfish. The Chargers have a very capably back-up in Turner and a 100% Turner is a better decision than an 80% Tomlinson. Besides LdT's injury was in his Knee, a sprained MCL, I don't see a guy with a hurting MCL breaking a whole lot of tackles and juking his way downfield. Could he have been effective? Sure. Would he have been the league leading rusher LdT? Absolutely not.

Work is piling up as we speak, the only downside of a day off, is 5 days worth of work in a 4 days span.

Finally saw an episode of AMCs acclaimed Mad Men this weekend. Pretty good, the era portrayal is excellent, guarantee a lot of time went into research. Not one scene without a lit cigarette, it's like watching Dennis Leary's No Cure for Cancer. For a guy who quit smoking not that long ago, it's kinda difficult to watch, the cravings come back with a vengenance. The Fiance's first conclusion of the show about 3/4 into it, "These guys are assholes". Same response I got while watching the Big Shots premiere with her a few months ago. Note to self, stop watching shows where the main characters are cheating on their girlfriends/fiances/wives. It's putting bad ideas in her head.

That's all I got for now, time to get back on the phones. There will be another Draft Update coming up sometime this week, but work is a little backed up so it might be later rather than sooner.

Till then.

2008 NFL Mock Draft 14-20

So if you are keeping up to date with my current mock draft then you know where I stand on the first 13 picks but are eagerly awaiting picks 14-20 so here they are. If this is your first time joining us here on The BearDown, Here's what you missed.

*Picks 1-6

*Picks 7-12

*UPDATE on top 12, bonus 13

So the top 13 picks are all but set in stone but my first go through has it looking like so:

1. Miami - Glenn Dorsey, DT - LSU
2. St. Louis - Chris Long, DE - Virginia
3. Atlanta - Darren McFadden, RB - Arkansas
4. Oakland - Sedrick Ellis, DT - USC
5. KC - Jake Long, OT - Michigan
6. NYJ - Ryan Clady, OT - Boise State
7. New England - Dan Connor, LB - Penn State
8. Baltimore - Matt Ryan, QB - Boston College
9. Cincinnati - Vernon Gholston, DE - Ohio State
10. New Orleans - Mike Jenkins, CB - South Florida
11. Buffalo - Brian Brohm, QB - Louisville
12. Denver - Kenny Phillips, S - Miami
13. Carolina - Andre Woodson, QB - Kentucky

Some of those may come as a shock to some of you. Trust me I've gotten the emails. So I reiterate what I said in post #1. THIS IS NOT WHAT I THINK WILL HAPPEN. THIS IS WHAT I THINK SHOULD HAPPEN. I firmly believe that the chances of the draft falling into place like this are not that great. I think Atlanta can find other options available in other venues. I also expect some trades to go on this year. Specifically, with Parcells at the helm, #1 could be traded a lot easier than in past years. ALSO there is still a coin-toss and playoffs to decide the final position of the picks. With all of that disclaimer out there here are the next batch.

Da Bears - at 14 the Bears need to find something and though the Defense was god awful this past season a lot of that can be attributed to injuries. I think the later rounds will see a Safety and D Tackle coming off the board to bolter the oft injured Bears D. But round 1 is offense. And if one of the top 3 QBs happens to fall this far he will be a Bear, no questions asked. A lot of that will fall on the shoulders of Buffalo though. Assuming that one of those QBs isn't available Da Bears are going to fix their running game. Yes more help is needed at Running Back but I'm talking offensive line. They're getting up there in years. OT Sam Baker from USC should be getting taken right about here. And as a Bears fan I am very ok with that pick.

God's Team - The Lions are picking 15 and are thouroughly confused at picking so low. They're not used to being able to think so much about the draft pick Typically they just take the best receiver in the draft and move along. This year things will change for Millen's bunch. With the "capable" arm of Kitna returning post being touched by God and the years of WR drafts making the Detroit passing game look, well it has a pulse, the Lions are hitting the backfield and it's gonna be Oregon RB Jonathon Stewart. Something has to open up that offense for Detroit and Kevin Jones isn't doing it, he's been hampered by injury and Antoine's cousin Aveion, sorry to say, is a return man. Lions are going Stewart or Mendenhall and I give the edge to Stewart.

Ret-ardinals - Can't ever seem to get anything right, but are also inching closer to a playoff birth. With continuing semi-success, a new stadium, and a weak conference they get closer by the year. A solid draft pick could put them over the top. They have a guy made for the Cards defense right here and its Florida DE Derek Harvey. Harvey is perfect for the Cards 3-4/4-3 scheme as he can play both DE and OLB. He would be a major piece that makes the Cards a contender in the weak, errrrr competitive, NFC West division.

Nordics - The V-Men from up north had a pretty successful season with the amazing outburst of Adrian Peterson. As much as they need help at QB (Tavaris Jackson is their starter, seriously) I think they look receiver. Bobby Wade (DVHS, UA, Chicago Bear alum) was the team's top receiver last year. I like Bobby as much as the next guy. He played at my high school, and my college and is one of only a handful of NFLers I have actually met and hung out with. He can't be a team's leading receiver, he's too small. He can be a good #2 or 3rd down option, but be honest. Minnesota needs some punch and they get it from LSU WR Early Doucet. Doucet is, in the opinion of many, the best WR in this draft and it's shocking that the Lions didn't pick him. Doucet could be a great fit for a growing Lions team. If they don't go WR they're going DB and my man Antoine will be heading up North.

Texans - A couple years ago they were picking 1 and "wasted" their pick on Mario Williams. Well a 16 spot draft position swap might prove the Texans, and me, right and silence some of those critics. Picking much later than usual it's surprising that the Texans are going to be able to get such a quality guy like Illinois RB Rashard Mendenhall here, and good for them. They need a guy like Mendenhall to open up that offense. This is one of the picks I am most secure with getting right, it will be a running back unless they all go earlier than expected for some reason. So with that said this is most likely the one I get wrong.

Philly - Their QB, whoever it will be next year, needs a target. I think they get one of the STEALS of the draft and pick up Cal WR DeSean Jackson right here. Jackson is a dangerous Receiver and to any of us who watched Cal play the last couple years, he has DANGEROUS speed. This could be a major help to an Eagles team who hasn't really had a weapon at reciever since T.O. left.

Chucky's - Jeff Garcia and crew were almost in it this year and are close to getting back into the playoff mix. If one of the top receivers is still available here, he might be a pick but as you can see above, I don't think there will be. I think they're going Defense and they have two options DB or shoring up that Defensive End spot. They picked up Gaines Adams last year and that turned out well. I think this pick is going to rely a lot on the next month. I'm leaning towards the Bucs taking Arizona CB Antoine Cason.

Gotta take a sales call back in a couple hours with some updates and a little more on the 2008 NFL Draft.

Continue here for picks 21-31 with a couple of updated top 20 picks.

Random Ramblings

I know I discussed it earlier in this post but how does Isiah still have a job. He brought down the english language, the Pacers, the CBA, the Raptors, and now is doing it to the Knicks. 10 years ago people heard Isiah Thomas and the first thing that came to mind was the Hall of Famer's toughness, or more simply that he was in fact a Hall of Famer and regarded as one of the best to do what it was he did. (fun senetence huh?). Now they hear his name and realize exactly how bad of an executive he is, or think about his recent sexual harrassment lawsuit (he cost the Knicks $11.2 Million. And no one seems to care, well except for the entire sports community, Knick fans, the city of New York. On second thought, everyone seems to care except for his boss, James Dolan.

Why is Pacman allowed anywhere near strip clubs? This isn't a off-the-cuff joke, I'm seriously looking for some answers, can anyone tell me why they still let him in?

Green Bay fans are sick. I mean absolutely out of their minds. I'm talking mentally unstable. I guess it's like the entire "city" is more like the hotel in The Shining. Trapped in the cold, drinking a lot, surrounded by nothing by white snow, and no one there has enough command of the english language to write a novel.

After requesting a Coors Light/Miss Teen South Carolina video the other day I was thinking, what can we compare this batch of Coors Light ads to in sports culture? The Spread Offense? Everyone loves the format and there are plenty of repeats/versions of it. I mean the Mora one was great, the Parcells one was hillarious, and even by mid 2006 NFL season when Denny Green flipped out I immediately knew that it would be a Coors Light commercial. My buddy Casey and I both knew it was coming. And now there are immitations of the ads. Check out YouTube, there are more than a few GREAT parodies already made.

The second a coach or player says/does anything great in a press conference Coors Light is on it, or else people at home are there to pick up the slack. Also, 4Real has mentioned a couple times to me that Matt Holliday was on Best Damn and had his young nephew do the "I'm a man" rant, but the only clip I can find is the whole 5 minute segment and don't feel like posting it.

The sports world just loves to piss me off. Really. The probable options for this years Super Bowl, The Patriots and The Packers. I hate both of them, and don't know how I can, in good conscience root for either one after all the shit I have talked about them over the years. And I have to watch the game, there isn't an option. They did it to me in the World Series too. A team I hate vs. I team I can't root for. The Super Bowl just looks to be two teams that I hate.

Congrats to Bobby Knight on 900. There's no joke, I'm genuinely happy for the guy. We're supposed to not like him because he gets amped and throws chairs? Last time I checked passion was a good thing, maybe he goes a little far sometimes but his passion and 900 wins go hand in hand in my book.

Who are you - Monk?

The Woj over at ESPN.com got major inside access to the recruiting trail recently and sat in on a conversation between Lou..Atl..Arkansas? Coach Bebby Petrino and a potential recruits father. One of the major highlights:

"Well, so far he's talked to Notre Dame, LSU, Florida, Mississippi and Auburn."
"Weird -- so did I. What I meant to say is, has he made any kind of verbal commitment?"
"Yes, to Auburn."

"Weird -- so did I. I mean, he's only given them his word, right?"

Absolutely hysterical. I would definitely swing by and read that one when you get a chance.

Cubs Continue to go International

The Chicago Cubs recently re-signed the 37-year old Jon Lieber, who is also the last 20 win Cub starting pitcher (2001). This seems like a good idea for the Cubs, he is a solid veteran pitcher who had a couple of injury shortened seasons. BUT they were non arm related injuries meaning he might just be slightly rusty. Cubs GM Jim Hendry has been close with Lieber since he met the 37-year old in Junior College and jumped at the chance to get him back in the clubhouse. Especially with some of these young arms on the Team's roster this could be a clutch pick-up who can deliver some serious innings and give some nice starting pitching to the Cubs.

This gives the Cubs and interesting look at the pitchers as Spring Training (pitchers and catchers report in 29 days.) Lieber jumps onto the list of potential Cubs starting candidates that includes (last year's rotation of) Carlos Zambrano, Ted Lilly, Rich Hill, and Jason Marquis. As well as failed closer, possible starter Ryan Dempster, and the sometimes troubled young pitchers Sean Marshall, Sean Gallagher and Kevin Hart. Having a vet like Lieber will be nice, but heading into Spring Training with 9 starting candidate is a little ridiculous. This seemingly large numbers of starting pitching candidates doesn't shock many of the ball clubs closest followers. "You try to get as many arms as you can," Hendry said. "As proven in the past, the good years or bad, when you think you have enough, you never do." Hendry is going to great lengths to test his new "more arms" theory by heading to India to look at a couple of young prospects.

The BearDown is not able to find much information or stats on the two but we were able to uncover the names and a couple of drawn pictures (photos being outlawed at major ball parks). Ganesha and Vishnu, have much more experience in the game of cricket and only recently have started to pick up Baseball.
The scouting report on Ganesha (left) is one word, Innings. Ganesha can and will go late in ball games and expect more than a few Complete games. On the other hand Vishnu (right) is more flash. We've heard reports of a pitch called the "Peri-ball" that is the world's only actual rising fastball. No one yet has any acutal proof of this pitch yet. It is also rumored that Vishnu carries a pretty heavy bat, especially for a pitcher, and will only consider playing in the National League. Hendry has paid 300 Rubies to both Ganesha and Vishnu's agents while attempting to contact.

What's going on in Morgantown?

Here's a new thing for school's to consider when hiring a new coach. Character. And I have undeniable proof of just why that is important. Let's look at the character of Rich Rodriguez.

*Steals Terrell Pryor, a top recruit, right out from under the nose of West Virgina before even announcing his departure to Michigan.

*Accepts a job to Michigan despite less than a year ago saying he was staying in Morgantown.

*Files a countersuit against WVU after they try to recoup the $4 Million he owes as stated in his SIX YEAR contract that he walked out of.

*Shreds and hides important player related files as far as the current WVU roster is concerned.

Why do I mention all of these things. Well it's proof that Rodriguez's real character came out recently and he just so happens to be someone you wouldn't want to model yourself after. Yet people are sending their young boys to learn by his example. Could that be dangerous?

Rich Rodriguez coached the Mountaineers 2001-2007.
Bengals WR Chris Henry attended WVU and played for Rodriguez from 2002-2005.
Titans CB Adam "Pacman" Jones attended WVU and played for Rodriguez from 2002-2005.

Henry has a "Criminal History" section on his Wikipedia entry.

Pacman has a "Legal Troubles" section on his Wikipedia entry.

Search for Chris Henry, you get mostly sports related, but you still get things related to the suspension and off field problems.

Search for Pacman Jones, you get 3-4 sports related entries and 6+ (especially if you click the news link) strip-club/shooting/warrant/arrest/etc entries.

Have you ever heard of Quincy Wilson? He was arrested in June of last year. Played his college ball at West Virginia for Rodriguez, and is close friends with Pacman and Henry. Close enough that the two showed up at his football camp.

It just makes you wonder exactly how many of Rodriguez's former players have criminal records, including the two years he spent at Clemson or even earlier at Salem, Tulane, or Glenville. It will be interesting to see which Michigan players get suspended a few years from now.

Is it something in the water in Morgantown?

What's the connection to Mike Vick here?

Well Surry County, Virginia, the home of Michael Vick, is just over 200 miles from Morgantown.

Well that's a little absurd but the point remains. We saw Rodriguez's character the last couple months, and we've seen the character of some of his former players. This doesn't bode well for Pat White and Steve Slaton or the future of Michigan football alumni.

The Pacman Saga

Pacman Jones has an affinity for strip clubs apparently. Less than a year ago we caught him making it rain in Vegas causing his ensuing suspension. Fast forward to this week, and Tennessee's version of our beloved video game hero, is in Atlanta and now is accused of assaulting a woman in the strip club:

"I was sitting in the office and he lunged at me numerous times in an effort to do grave bodily harm," Jackson wrote in the warrant application filed Jan. 7. "Veronica Jones, an owner, went into the hall to deal with a member of his entourage. I followed to gawk. He was in the hall, surprisingly reached over or around a security guard and sucker punched me in my left eye."

Man this guy is great. He's obviously keeping his pimp hand strong, another thing we can check off Mr. Jones' list-of-things-to-do-that-happen-to-be-cool-sayings-in-the-hood. Now instead of going on a random tear of bad puns involving the stupidity of the 6th pick from the 2005 draft, I'm just gonna say this: Pacman...you'll be playing for the Bengals in no time.

Busy Day

It was pretty busy around work today, plus work on the shop was a little more time consuming than I thought. Anyways here's a couple videos I found on the net today.

I've never seen ANYONE look as dejected as Kenny George does after getting dunked on. He drops his chin STRAIGHT to his chest. Some people say getting dunked on is part of the game, especially when you play in the post. I don't think Kenny George feels the same way.

Dan Majerle would have dropped his epic "hey hun, don't forget the coffee." line following that one. Speaking of which, I read recently on TrueHoop that the former Suns standout trey-baller and current Phoenix restaurant owner drops the notorious line post dunk during his announcing duties. If you aren't aware of the joke go watch Good Will Hunting or just click here and listening to Matt Damon deliver it.

Six and a half months ago Jon Kitna promised us 10 wins for the Lions. Just over four months ago he said he was miraculously healed after being knocked out of a game with a concussion, saying he could, "definitely feel the hand of God". 3 months ago he was "naked" in Detroit for his Halloween costume. Two and a half months ago he was the starting QB for an explosive 6-2 Lions team. Three weeks ago he was the starting QB of another Matt Millen led sub .500 Lions team (7-9). Three days ago he gave us this little beauty:

Former UA/current Titan Running Back who left the program upbruptly last spring to enter the NFL draft got a real taste of the NFL a couple weeks ago.

That freight train is Darryll Reid of the Colts and the bug on his windshield is Henry. Dallas Clark seemed to enjoy that one, and who can blame him.

Can you believe it's been over a year since this happened:

The meltdown to end all meltdowns. Jim Rome just flat out lays into Caitlin Upton. Part of me feels bad for the girl to be so beat down for this that I'm still talking about it a year later. It's too bad that the education system, therefore, such as, the Iraq didn't supply this girl with enough Maps, or whatever she's talking about. When is this going to be a Coors Light commercial?

Guy: Miss Upton where is that place with all the terrorists who DON'T drink Coors Light?
Caitlin: such as, The Iraq
Guy: Yeah I think that's what it's called, I'll just show it to you on one of those flat picture of countries.
Caitlin: maps, therefore.
Guy: Yeah I think that's what they're called. You're so smart, what ethnicity are you again?

Can we just edit the guy from Billy Madison in there please, to drop the what you've just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul." In fact if anyone can make that video for me and send it in I will be forever in debted to you.

Have any of you heard of Tito and the Gun Show? 4Real showed me this awhile ago but I figured I'd pass it on:

They also have a poor quality live version on YouTube and a new one about Tim Hundson worth a listen.

Remember Slamball? One of the greatest things ever right? That's what these kids thought too.

Quick Draft Update

The NY Jets reportedly have decided to stick with Chad Pennington and Kellen Clemens. That means that Matt Ryan with the 6th pick no longer makes any sense. Also Laurinaitis has decided to return for his Senior year which I suggested would happen in Picks 1-6, but doing what one should never do I second guessed myself in Picks 7-12 and suggested he was NFL and New England bound. To ratify those egregious errors here's a Draft Update 2.5, complete with an extra pick.

With the 6th pick the New York Jets fans will be looking running back or offensive lineman. Well they've got Thomas Jones and although he only had one rushing TD last year he performed well (3.6 YPC) and Leon Washington gave him a few breathers and managed to rack up a 5 YPC average over 70 carries. I don't think Running Back is where they'll be going but their running game does need a lot of help. Here we should see OT from Boise State Ryan Clady coming off the board and heading out to New York as the Jets fans boo, because that's what they do on draft day.

Now at 7 the Patriots have a choice to make. And for them this is more of a luxury pick than anything. Lawrence Maroney had a decent year in a pass first offense so I don't think they're going Running Back here despite some good Running Back talent waiting to be picked up. Laurinaitis is no longer available so are they still looking at LB. I see Penn State LB Dan Connor getting picked up. Their Linebacking corps is still getting older by the Minute and they should be looking to the future. Dan Connor could easily be that future.

Of course at 8 now Baltimore is looking at Matt Ryan or Brian Brohm. Yes I know they still have Troy Smith and Smith looked pretty good in the last few games of the season when he saw some playing time but passing up on Matt Ryan for a 5th rounder who's barely 6 feet tall is going to be hard to explain to Ravens fans. If they aren't looking to get Ryan then they better start listening to some trade offers. If Matt Ryan really is available going in to pick 7 or 8 expect to see a lot of phones ringing in an effort to make a move up there where no one thought they would be available. I say Ryan but I expect a trade.

Now at 11 Buffalo is also licking it's chops at a top QB that didn't look to be available, Losman even said he wants out of Buffalo and I don't think Trent Edwards is the future. So Brohm and Woodson are available here. I think Brohm has the edge right now but all of that could change going into the combines. Maybe Woodson moves ahead, maybe Brennan surprises a lot of people, maybe Dennis Dixon still interests, but Brian Brohm should be the pick here.

And for the additional pick that I promised, the Carolina Panthers with the 13th pick go to the offensive backfield and they will take Andre Woodson from Kentucky. Delhomme has been average since that Super Bowl run, Matt Moore is not the future, and Testaverde simply can not play another year, it's against the laws of phyisics. If they aren't one of the teams to trade up looking for the slipping Ryan, then expect them to jump all over Andre Woodson right here. Unless they think they can get Brennan or Dixon in Round 2 and they're happy with that.

So an updated Recap:
1. Miami - Glenn Dorsey, DT - LSU
2. St. Louis - Chris Long, DE - Virginia
3. Atlanta - Darren McFadden, RB - Arkansas
4. Oakland - Sedrick Ellis, DT - USC
5. KC - Jake Long, OT - Michigan
6. NYJ - Ryan Clady, OT - Boise State
7. New England - Dan Connor, LB - Penn State
8. Baltimore - Matt Ryan, QB - Boston College
9. Cincinnati - Vernon Gholston, DE - Ohio State
10. New Orleans - Mike Jenkins, S - South Florida
11. Buffalo - Brian Brohm, QB - Louisville
12. Denver - Kenny Phillips, S - Miami
13. Carolina - Andre Woodson, QB - Kentucky

Don't forget to keep up with the draft action with Picks 1-6, picks 7-12 , picks 14-20 , and an UPDATED picks 21-31.

Bring in Mitchell, He'll Get to the Bottom of this

We've all seen the list:

Barry Bonds, Jason Grimsley, Miguel Tejada, Brian Roberts, Timbaland, 50 Cent, Mary J. Bli...What?

According to the Albany Times Union, which is in fact a real newspaper, the list of linked superstars with steroids and HGH isn't only in the clubhouse. So far Mary J. Blige, 50 Cent, Timbaland, Wyclef, and Tyler Perry have all been linked to a Steroid scandal brewing in Queens, NY. Seriously. Also mentioned, but not directly with the Queens bust, was Sly Stallone (who was linked to HGH in Australia in May 2007).

Do we need to put an asterik next to Timbaland's album sales? Will we have to take back Sly Stallones star on the Walk of Fame (if he has one). At least now we know what's really in that Formula 50 Vitamin Water, 1 part water, 1 part grape flavoring, 2 parts winstrol. Also, this let's us know that one of the unknown side-effects of steroids is being bullet-proof. Sweet.

2008 NFL Mock Draft 7-12

Here for another edition of Dom's NFL Mock Draft we got picks 7 through 12 for you guys. Go ahead and take a look back at picks 1-6 to get caught up. A quick recap for you:

1. Miami - Glenn Dorsey, DT - LSU
2. St. Louis - Chris Long, DE - Virginia
3. Atlanta - Darren McFadden, RB - Arkansas
4. Oakland - Sedrick Ellis, DT - USC
5. KC -Jake Long, OT - Michigan
6. NY Jets - Matt Ryan, QB - Boston College

I still stand by those picks since I think Atlanta has a chance at solving their QB problem before draft day and McFadden is an incredible pick-up anywhere in the draft. With that said, Matt Ryan could also be the 3rd pick by Atlanta and McFadden would most likely drop to Oakland. There is also chances of picks 3, 4, and 5 being different since they are subject to a coin toss. As I said before though I'm sticking with 1-6 until majro developments change them. With that said here are picks 7 - 12.

Brady Bunch - They really don't need anything as proof of their dominating season. Furthermore they really, really, don't need anything on the offensive side of the ball. Barring injuries or trades. I think the best outcome for New England here is bolstering their Defense, specifically their linebackers. The 4 starters this weekend are Tedy Bruschi (12 years) Adalius Thomas (8), Junior Seau (18), and Mike Vrabel (11). That's a combined 49 years, next year it's 53. That's a lot of miles. Plus Rosie Colvin is on and off the IR all season, every season, has been since he left Chicago. I think the only pick is Ohio State LB James Laurinaitis. If Laurinaits comes out of college, and is here, he will be the next Mike Vrabel.

B-More - The Billick-less Ravens will be looking for something, anything, to get out of their rut. I think that comes in the form of a new QB. Right now that pick looks to be solid as Brian Brohm. But if Ryan goes to the Falcons and the Jets pick up Brohm then this will be Andre Woodson from Kentucky. I feel safe saying that this will be Louisville's Brohm though. The Kyle Boller experiment is done and it was not overwhelmingly successful.

Bungles - The Nasty Natti has tricked people for a few years now and no one realizes they're not in on the joke. The Bungles had one playoff season and everone thought they had shed the Bungles image. Think about it for a second. They've only had one winning season since 1991. That 11-5 fluke in '05. Other than that they've had four 8-8 seasons and a bunch sub .500. They need a lot of help. Besides trying to get prison terms lowered they need some help on the Defensive side of the ball. They need it bad. So the question is who? Ohio State DE Vernon Gholston? Penn State LB Dan Connor? South Florida CB Mike Jenkins? Florida DE Derrick Harvey? It think they go Gholston, but could surprise many with Dan Connor. This pick will rely heavily on what happens in the coming months. The only downside of the above players is none of them have any priors so I'm not sure they'll get along with the rest of the Bungles roster creating some serious character clashes.

America's Saints - They slipped a little this year after their emotional 2006-07 season. They had a good run but couldn't overcome their slow start. They've still got a very good team and this pick will help them in the future. They could use some help in the defensive backfield with Mike McKenzie and Roman Harper being the only DBs there with name recognition for many of us. They need a playmaker back here. I think the nod goes to USF's Mike Jenkins here but look out for Arizona's Antoine Cason. He has silently been moving up some draft boards and his character impresses many of the people who have contacted him. It will be interesting to see if the 2007 Thorpe Award winner can garner enough interest at the Combine and in workouts to steal the spotlight from Jenkins. As of right now I'm 60/40 that the Saints go with Jenkins but that could obviously change.

B-lo - The frigid northern New Yorkers need some help. Recently they've been looking back on the early 90s and their back to back to back to back Super Bowl losses and the Music City Miracle with fondness compared to what they've been watching the last 8 seasons without a post-season. Though they finished with the same record (7-9) as they did last season, they actually did look a little bettter but still have a ways to go. Especially after the emotional loss of Kevin Everett. Buffalo needs to look to a new young talent to garner some interest nationally and make Buffalo worth discussing. So the question is, which offensive weapon do they go after Early Doucet, Mario Manningham, DeSean Jackson, Ray Rice, or Kevin Smith? I think one of the best picks they could make here would be OT Ryan Clady from Boise State and he would be one of the top steals of the draft. Of course the chances that Clady is still available at 11 are slim, in my draft it's possible and is the best pick for Buffalo. He would be a solid pick but don't be surprised if the Bills go for Flash over Substance and chase down one of the talented backs or receivers.

Broncs - Shanahan's troops have seemingly been at a standstill since their Super Bowl victories. They've had 4 post-season trips in the 9 years since then and 3 times lost in the wild card. Jay Cutler made a nice turn for the better this season and it appears maybe the whole Plummer/Cutler fiasco wasn't the worst thing to happen to Denver since Dikembe left the Nuggets. The offense has looked better and better by the game. The defense isn't really making Tom Jackson proud. They could use a safety or a defensive tackle right about now and with most of the top D-Linemen already off the board Safety is naturally the way to go. It's really going to be a coin toss at pick 12 between Florida DE Derrick Harvey and Miami Safety Kenny Phillips. I think they're gonna go with Phillips here but this is one of the biggest either or picks of the first round. Either way they're going to get a solid player who can have a great career and bolster the Denver Defense. I really don't see a wrong choice between the two.

That's it for now don't forget to get caught up with picks 1-6. I'll have 13-18 sometime later this week/early next week along with the updates as far as who declares and who doesn't.

UPDATE: A couple picks changed since the original posting of this article. An updated list can be found here in Picks 1-13 version 2.0

Don't forget to keep up with the draft action with picks 14-20.

Blame it on Mexico...

Back in 1991 one of the greatest men to grace the stage in a cowboy hat released one of my favorite songs.

"Blame it on Mexico if you need a reason, Say too much guitar music, tequila, salt and lime. Blame it on Mexico, but she's the reason."

Now it appears that quoting George Strait is the fun thing to do when covering sports. Sure it's a little ironic that its a Cowboys player getting wrecked by the lyrics of a country song, but let's be honest here. Bromo heading to Cabo was not the reason the Cowboys lost yesterday. The G-Men played a great game and did what they knew needed to be done. They pressured the hell out of Romo. I reiterate, it is not Tony's fault that the Cowboys lost yesterday, he was getting a tremendous amount of pressure and needed his receivers to step up which they failed to do. He also needed his offensive line to show up, which they failed to do. 11 penalties on the offensive line, and a couple of sacks amongst constant pressure. Sure it's easy to take a line from one of country music's greatest but let's be honest. It wasn't like Romo was out of control, he went with Jason Witten, his wife, Jessica, and Jessica's Parents. I don't forsee a lot of craziness, maybe a few Coronas on the beach while playing pictionary. But I digress the real shocker here is not that the Boys lost or even that they haven't won a playoff game since 1995. The Shocker is T.O's post-game comments while hiding tears behind dark sunglasses.

"This is not about Tony. You guys can point the finger at him. You can talk about the vacation. And if you do that, it's really unfair. It's really unfair. It's my team. It's my quarterback. If you guys do that, man, it's unfair. We lost as a team. We lost as a team, man."

What?

I think Donovan McNabb and Jeff Garcia just had a combined guffaw the likes of which none of us have ever seen. What is T.O. on? This is the guy who chased McNabb up and down the sidelines in Philly. Called Garcia out, and is sobbing over the mistreatment of Bromo. Is anyone else as confused as me?

NFL 2007 Playoffs - Divisionals

Ok so I've been a little bit behind with the posts - my bad - running around the sprawling Phoenix metropolis is both time-consuming and internet-lacking providing a lethal combination for slacking. However with the Panthers, Bears, and Browns out of the playoffs, I suppose the Beardown crew could conjure up some unbias - however boring - outlooks on this year's playoff picture. With the first week under our belts, and the pretend teams eliminated - although Seattle is still in the hunt which I still giggle about due to their interesting season and weak ass conference - the predictable happened San Diego is still here even with Norv Turner despite his best efforts to jinx another team. The Giants beat Tampa Bay who came out of the NFC South which sadly was one of the worst conferences this year, being compiled of New Orleans, Hotlanta, and the beloved Panthers. And Jacksonville downed the Steelers pleasing me, 4real, and our buddy WithLeather. With these wins in the scrapbook, let's look at the weeks to come. I'm laying it on the line saying this is what's up.

Saturday:
Seattle @ Green Bay: As much as Dom hates Favre, he's having the season of his life. This year's Farve highlight videos could be a Levitra commercial. With Green Bay having the second most effective offense in the NFL (second only to the Brady Bunch) Seattle is gonna have an uphill battle with their mediocre defense. To make matters worse Branch and Hackett are probable for the game and most likely not gonna be 100% to play on Saturday, where they will be needed extremely to try to outscore the Green Bay offense. Let's not forget it's Lambeau Field. In January. Fuck that. I pick the Pack.

Jacksonville @ New England: Jacksonville did beat Pittsburg in one of the nastiest games ever earlier in the season putting to rest the whole cold-weather issue. That and dealing with the annoying fans of Pittsburgh. So they're more than ready to deal with the cold weather and mind-numbing fans of Foxboro. New England hasn't looked as stellar recently as they did in the first half of the season. They've had close calls at many games, with teams they should've slaughtered. Tom Brady is human as seen in the last 3 weeks. The Hoody is more than just cotton and screen print, he infact has a pulse. But then again, its the Patriots. It's gonna be a close one as long as the Jags stay physical throughout the whole game. Hopefully the Jags can run the ball into the endzone as many times as the Pats throw into the endzone. Game plan, keep Brady off the field. Oh yah, I'm partial to the Jags because they came into the league the same time as the Panthers - so I lied about being partial - and I hate the Pats. I pick the Jags on a prayer.

Sunday:

San Diego @ Indy: San Diego seemed to have Peyton's number earlier this season stealing 6 picks from him and taking the win. But with Gates questionable, Rivers' head may be spinning in the backfield. As a fan of LT, I believe he'll play a competitive game but his lead blocker Oneal isn't looking too pretty for this game as listed as probable. On the flipside, injuries plague the Colts all year, and it doesn't look like it's letting up. Both safeties are questionable as well as one linebacker. Their recieving core finally gets back Marvin at the expense of their rookie slot reciever Gonzalez who hasn't had a terrible year. This game hangs in the balance of San Diego's defense responding and locking down Peyton. But I'm still sticking with the Colts.

New York @ Dallas: Oh Bromo, here's your second chance. This year though, he won't be the one holding the ball for field goals. It's been his breakout season this year with a couple missteps so we will all finally see what kind of playoff quarterback he is. Eli, coming off his first playoff win is riding pretty high as he beat his brother to his first playoff win. The battle of the Young Gun Slingers begins. The Giants have kept it close both times they've played the Cowboys only to have the T.O.-Romo combination beat them in the 4th quarter. Oh yah, the 'Boys get Terry Glenn back. I pick Bromo and his 'Boys.

Unlike the NCAA football year, the NFL has been rather predictable. Mostly because for teams that were on the fence, when it rained it poured. Injuries, crimes, and other things helped to seperate and distinguished the best teams from the not-so-good ones. Oh ya Romo...no girls at the game.

A Little Last Minute Late Bowl Season Breakdown.

Bowl season is over and there are a lot of teams happy with the results, and a few who were not. The Big Eleven continued to struggle in the Bowl Games going 3-5 and losing both BCS games to superior conferences. Illinois was thrashed by USC and Ohio State lost to an SEC contender for the second straight year. Here are a few wrap up thoughts on the Bowl Season that was.

I still think that a playoff system is necessary in college football. Whether it’s a 4 team, 8 team, or my super special 16 team bracket is up for discussion. Unfortunately for some, Georgia stomped on Hawai’i in the Sugar Bowl. Hawai’i, and really the WAC in general over the last 2 years was a major catalyst for my reasoning of a playoff system. The irony is after that game was over Georgia President, Michael Adams is saying we need a playoff. Mere days after his victory suggested otherwise. But he’s still right, the 3 loss Bulldogs deserved a chance as much as Oklahoma, LSU, Ohio State, West Virginia and others.

It was only mildly mentioned by me, and I haven’t read it any where else but the irony is amazing in Tallahassee. The Noles were playing in the Music City Bowl. They lost because about 20 of their players were academically ineligible. They were ineligible because they cheated in a Music History class. Irony.

Because of this seasons flip flopping of the rankings every week the folks in El Paso, TX got to witness the Brut Sun Bowl as they have every year since the Depression. The Oregon Ducks soundly defeated the South Florida Bulls. Why is this important, it’s a December Bowl game. It wasn’t even a BCS game. It’s important because both of these teams were ranked #2 at one point in the season and they played their last game in 2007. Had this game taken place during the season prior to November this would have been the game of the week by far. Instead it was a pre-New Years Bowl Game. That is rare, but I suppose it will happen when there are 8 different #2 seeds (I don’t feel like going back and re-researching this I’m just guessing 8 seems about right to me).

Does the name Tony Temple mean anything to you? Probably not unless you follow Mizzou. The Senior back rushed for a Cotton Bowl record 281 yards and 4 TDs. He only had 3 games over 100 yds all season and actually finished with 40 of less in 7 of the season’s contests.

The Alamo Bowl was the 500th game of JoePa’s career and his 23rd Bowl Win. With the Penn State semi-success over the last couple seasons and Florida State slowly slipping into futility, it looks like JoePa and Bowden will be going head to head until one of them actually does die on the sideline. JoePa has 3 more Bowl Wins and 1 less win overall. JoePa could pass Bowden before conference play opens up next year.

Colt Brennan looked a little less than Heisman worthy against Georgia. It will be interesting to see how far he falls in the draft and if the chip on his shoulder can make him a really good NFL QB, or if he’s gonna be the biggest bust since Leaf. Time can only tell on that one.

Notre Dame did not play in a Bowl game. This was a big story in one of the worst seasons in ND Fighting Irish history. It however isn’t all that uncommon for the Irish who have gone from unstoppable to laughable in the last decade. From the 1987 (‘88 Bowl) season to the 1998 (‘99 Bowl) The Irish played in 11 Bowl games. Since the 2000 (‘01 Bowl) season they have played and lost in 5, 3 times in BCS bowls. They have also lost they’re last nine. Next year is not looking that promising either for Touchdown Jesus’ tribe.

The Pac-10 went 4-2 in Bowl Games this Bowl Season. UCLA had an interim coach, was still hampered by injuries, and barely lost to BYU. Look out for the Pac-10 next season with parity (except for USC) becoming more prevalent in the conference the Pac could surprise some folks next year.

And on that note it is becoming more and more obvious that the SEC and Pac are becoming the top two conferences by far. Environmentally more people want to live in California (4 schools) and Arizona (2 schools) then in Ohio or Nebraska. There is also better football being played at the High School level in the western states. We are looking at a major paradigm shift in the college football world. They play is much better in the SEC and Pac-10 and the recruits are going to these schools for a reason. And if USC gets hit with sanctions because of the Reggie Bush fiasco and if Carroll leaves the Pac will be stealing a lot of those recruits further evening out the Pac-10. It could be the beginning of a good decade for the West Coast teams. There is an outside shot that there could be as many as 5 (USC, Oregon, ASU, UCLA, Oregon State, Arizona, and Cal all have a chance) Pac-10 teams in the top 25 at some point next season, perhaps all at once, and at least 3 (Oregon, USC, ASU) in the preseason rankings.

You Can Find Me in St. Louie...

A record setting day for St. Louis took place yesterday. The Billikens made history against George Washington U putting up a powering 20 points. G-Dub threw up a nasty 49 on there as well. Mind you this is college hoops. I was surprised as well, watching late night Sportscenter, I was almost certain that football season was over, only to be dumbstruck as I watched the lowlight reel in which the Billikens missed 24 consecutive shots taking them over 50 minutes between baskets - on their side, it the time counted also included time off during halftime. Come on man, 20 points? I would've loved it if G-Dub tipped one of their misses in to set St. Louis back to zero. Unless they're playing that back to 13 rule. I always thought that rule was bullshit anyways.

A Rare Political Moment

As I mentioned earlier in This post I'm not a fan of discussing politics. I am a fan of following politics and politics in general, but I came to a conclusion a long time ago that politics and friends are like oil and water. If you add alcohol to that it becomes like oil and water with a lit stick of dynamite, a much deadlier combination. With that said I had a couple of thoughts about the election so far that I felt I needed to put down.

Let me get this straight Hillary Clinton won New Hampshire after breaking down and crying. I have two opinions on this, first of all there is some doubt on my part as to whether or not the crying was real or staged. Though I like to think of her as an evil entity trying to gain sympathy I'm more of the opinion that it was in fact real. Which brings me to my next point. Women are highly emotional and volatile creatures. We all know this. All men have been witness to or victim of one of those 180 mood swings that throw off the balance of the earth. It's part of their nature, without being too stereotypical, it's true.

Women have more emotions and they use them. I don't know how to cry, I'm not bragging it's the way I grew up. I know many of you are the same. What happens when Hillary has a mood swing in office. Once a month there will be upheaval in foreign policy, economic planning, government spending, something. I also think that Hillary is not necessarily winning this election. I think a lot of people just want to see Slick Willie C. back in the White House. It's like well now that we don't have to worry about him leading the Free World, let's see what fun adventures he takes us on.

My next thought revolves around Mike Huckabee. Gov. Huckabee was out of the race before he entered it. But he did something genius that might just pay off for him. He picked the best possible running mate. Stephen Colbert. Yes I am a huge Colbert fan, and I'm not sure of Colbert's political abilities (esp. since he is playing a character on his nightly TV show) but people love the guy and that has to have something to do with Huckabee's rise in Iowa.

There are almost 1.5 million members of the 1,000,000 strong for Colbert Facebook group. Let's assume that at least 85% of these 1.5 million are above the age of 18 and a US citizen. That means they're potential voters. I gotta figure at least a few hundred thousand are going to swing their vote his way if he really is Huckabee's Veep. Gov. Huckabee entered the race in 6th, won Iowa and got 3rd in New Hampshire. The support of Colbert could be enough to get Huckabee into the Final two and an actual chance at winning the party's nomination, and a major place to see what is possible is the upcoming South Carolina caucus. Stephen Colbert's home state, and the one he was planning on running in, plus he was on the Report last night, and showed his great sense of humor.

And on a completely serious note. Huckabee could take down Obama or Hillary. It's not definite but I think he is the Republican party's only chance. And he's going to need Colbert on his side and potentially as a serious running mate for political strategizing. He also has some issues where he is firmly Republican (Fence, Gay Marriage, Abortion) but he's pretty moderate in other areas. He also is strongly for economic idependence, energy independence, and making America more self-sustaining. Do I think he will win the Republican nomination? not really, do I think he can? possibly, and could he be the next President? slim, but if he runs with Colbert it will be really interesting to see what happens.

2008 NFL Mock Draft 1-6

NFL Draft season is a few very short months away, despite the fact that it's a leap year. And I'm sure many of you out there are wondering just where we think your favorite players are going to land. So, since we don't know exactly who's coming out, who did what at the combine, and what the draft order is I'm going to go very slow so I don't have to eat too many of my own words. So I have today's top 6 picks. It is important to note draft positions 3, 4, and 5 are depending on a coin toss to be done in February, so this could all change in a month.

Fins – Miami still has Jon Beck and Trent Green, I would assume they’re gonna try at least one more year before making another QB run. I feel like if you’re in the position you can use help in pretty much every position. Jason Taylor and Zach Thomas are getting old. I think they’re gonna need to take the best player available and in my opinion that player is LSU’s Glenn Dorsey.

The Lou – I also think that what I think about Miami easily could be said for the St. Louis Rams. Dorsey will most likely be off of the board (barring trades or something else of that nature) so you gotta think who’s the next best player available. Once again, in my opinion, the 2nd best available also happens to be the 2nd best Defensive player in the draft and the 2nd best DLineman in the draft. Howie’s son Chris. He has (warning way overused draftday term) tremendous upside and potential. He’s a little thin but bulk can be easily added and you know he has the genetics for it (look at Howie). There is also potential for him to be the reverse Urlacher with the same result. Instead of bulking up and moving up a weight-class, Long could potentially drop down a class and play some OLB in the NFL.

ATL – Atlanta's pick will be made most likely by their new coach signifying where the future of this program is. There are a few solid picks to make here for Atlanta with an aging veteran line-up and a lack of a pro bowler. I love Warrick Dunn but he’s going into his 12th NFL season. That’s a lot of miles for a Running back, especially the featured back in a run first offense like Atlanta has used over the years (2006 = Vick = bad passer, 2007 = no Vick = no QB). I wouldn’t mind seeing Warrick get a little help here in the backfield and possibly in the form of Razorback Darren McFadden, saying he goes to the draft which most people are suggesting. Of course this is the pick that has the most opportunity to change of the first 3. Atlanta needs a QB too and Brian Brohm, Matt Ryan, and Andre Woodson could be good pro QBs. If they can address the QB position in the off season and McFadden comes out this should be a lock, but if there’s still a QB question in the air, this one could surprise many.

Raider Nation – Next season will be JaMarcus’ first full season for Oakland after selfishly holding out for half of the 2007 season he will finally get a chance to learn to O and show whether or not he can run it. He has the potential, especially after sitting out his rookie season to be a HUGE bust in the NFL. I for one HAD nothing against him, but I hope Karma bites him in the ass and he fails due to his selfish nature. Too bad for Oakland. But back to the draft. QB looks to be in pretty good control, for now, with JaMarcus and Daunte Culpepper so Oakland can address any one of it’s lacking areas. There are 3 picks that easily make sense here and to no one’s surprise they’re all on defense. Warren Sapp has announced his plans on retiring and though he hasn’t been his old Pro Bowl form since leaving Tampa he will be missed. Buckeye End Vernon Gholston could be a good pass rushing fit here to help out the line, but if you’re looking to replace Sapp, Trojan Tackle Sedrick Ellis makes a little more sense. There is an outside chance that Buckeye Laurinaitis might skip his senior year but I think the Tigers left a bad taste in his mouth and will want some redemption making him unavailable.

KC – I think it’s down to 2 picks for the Chiefs right here. Either stick with the Croyle/Huard melodrama that’s been unfolding since Trent Green’s injury in the 2006 season and hope one of them finally pans out meaning that a QB is not needed or go for the revival and bring in one of the aforementioned QBs. This could weigh a lot on what Atlanta does with their pick. Also This pick could be appealing to some for trade purposes, especially if Brohm, Ryan, and Woodson are all still available. Saying that they don’t trade the pick it’s either Matt Ryan or some protection in the form of Michigan Monster Jake not Howie’s son Long. Tentatively I’m going to say Kansas City will be going Jake Long because I definitely think that would make the most sense for them.

J-E-T-S - I think the team from Jersey will (depending on how things fall in front of them) take the first QB of the draft. Matt Ryan could be heading to New York in place of Chad Pennington. I think it's actually very smart and lucky pick for the Jets if Ryan slips this far in the draft. It will also be interesting to see how Ryan plays pro ball. That will be one of the things I'm most interested in following as this year's crop of Juniors and Seniors takes to the NFL. This pick has major potential for the Jets, especially if Brohm and Ryan are coming into the draft at pretty similar projection as far as NFL impact and both are still available. New England (7), Cincinatti (9), and New Orleans (10) don't look to be needing new QBs and Baltimore (8) could take it's pick between Ryan and Brohm. The Jets could potentially trade this one away and pick up a few helpful players/picks and still have a chance to get the leftover of Ryan/Brohm or possible Woodson later and gain some much needed help in other areas or picks. Of course if Ryan or Brohm go earlier anywhere else, or one of the 3 top QBs falters in the months to come/combine, it might be safe to use the pick there, in which case if Ryan is still on the board, that's the pick. If he went earlier then most likely it's Brohm.

And before you say anything, yes I know. I have 4 Linemen in my top 5 picks and no quarterbacks in what could be a strong NFL QB class. I feel that these are the positions that a team must build around. Your QB can be the 2nd coming of Marino, but if he's getting sacked before he gets in his dropback it doesn't matter much. Same holds true for a running back. He could be the next Barry Sanders but if there aren't any holes to hit, his career and numbers will fall short of expectations. And if you don't have a solid defensive line then your linebackers will get eaten alive and your defense will give up 35 pts a game. It's the way of the game, and if you think I'm wrong, then make your site and tell me why you think Brohm, Ryan, McFadden will go 1, 2, 3. I'm not saying my picks are what will happen, I'm saying they're what should happen.
Continue here for picks 7-12. I will continually update these at least once per week.
UPDATE: after some more research, and James Laurinaitis deciding to stay, picks 1-13 have been updated here at 1-13 version 2.0.
Don't forget to keep up with the draft action with picks 14-20.
Finally an updated 1-31 for the 2008 NFL Draft

rivalry game part 2

Go ahead and check out the post before this, rivalry games.

Jordan Hill starts off the second half with a couple thunderous, savage dunks, then proceeds to miss yet another jump hook in the paint. And got his 3rd foul so he's heading to the bench.

Wise on the steal, take it the length, dishes to Dillon, ball hangs on lip, and goes in.

Brielmeyer just tried to rip Pendergrafts arms off. I'm ok with that, except he might have just reinjured his prior separated shoulder. Not good. Fendi is the big man. He's six/six. Not big enough, and he alady has a turnover. Why isn't Big Nasty Walters in the game. I know he's out of shape but he's Big Nasty, a force to be reckoned with.

Of course with the smaller line up the quicker Fendi can draw a couple more fouls from Pendergraft.

Bob Elliot happens to be right again, attack Pendergraft. He will play soft defense or foul, either way it's a good thing for UA. And Budinger just threw it to O'Neil, unfortunately he isn't on the court so that's a bad thing, especially when he wasn't particularly pressured and time wasn't running out. Just bad decisions.

So I'm starting to realize a couple things.

Simmons is way better than me at this, which is fine, he gets paid to do what I do for fun. It's also really hard to come up with stuff in a running diary when you're solo and don't have anyone to bounce ideas and jokes off of. Also Dennis Erickson sounds a little like Kermit.

We need a big stop and big bucket to shut up ASU, their fans and players are getting back into it. This is exactly what Kevin O'Neil astutely said we needed to avoid in his halftime statement.

I like the agreement me and Mrs. Dom have. I watch sports and do my site and when I'm not doing either of those I watch her stuff. I know too much about The Girls Next Door, Tila Tequila, and the rest of that crap. It seems like a fair trade to me. That's what relationships are all about, compromise. Also I kill all bugs, fix things, and take the trash out and she has the babies.

Backk to action and we're operating at a dimished lead. I will be maintaining radio silence for the next 5 minutes to regroup. ASU narrowly avoids their 3rd or 4th shot clock violation by dribbling the lane then rght off their own feet and out of bounds. Arizona ball.

OK after the Hill 1 for 2 from the line and following ASU turnover following UA turnover ASU bucket and UA time-out I'm back. This game is driving me crazy. This season is driving me crazy, we need to stop the turnovers. And Mrs. Dom is now getting interested in the blog and giving me advice to pass along. For example, don't call your pregnant girlfriend fat, now that seems like something we all know, I did, but she felt it was worth publishing for the rest of you to know. It's tidbits like that. She suggested that I keep a diary of every time I say/do something that angers her I should let the rest of you know so you're significant other can agree to the level of my stupidity. As Always, I'll reiterate, I Am An Idiot. This is the one certainty in our lives. And I am usually wrong, according to her.

Back to the game. Missed shot, stupid Danny Dillon penalty and ASU has 35 seconds to make something happen, and they only needed six to dive the lane and climb back within 1. HILL MISSED ANOTHEr HOOK SHOT, STOP IT ALrEADY DAMNIT.

"Again r problems"

Hill fouled in the lane going straight up and gets to shoot 2 from the stripe, and Pendergraft heads to the bench with his 4th. Time to make a move CATS.

Hill dunks it, see it works much better when he faces the basket to shott. It seems like common sense I know, and now there is a completely Bullshit call on Dillon.

OK after the replay, maybe it wasn't such a bad call by the ref, terrible decision by Dillon though. ASU back within 3 after the missed 2nd shot.

Good take by Chase going to the charity stripe and Pendergraft is on his way back in. GOT TO ATTACK HIM NOW and get his 5th. Chase sinks his 2nd shot, Pendrgraft sinks a jumper and Chase can't connect on the 3.

Cats still up 3, shot clock winding down, Pick and roll and Pendergraft is heading to the line, down 3. Just over 3 minutes left and we're on a Time Out. Mrs. Dom is thoroughly confused about the rules of basketball, says she never sees fouls when they happen and can't tell who they're calling a foul on. She wonders if it's ok to "hit the ball out of the other guys hands and the ball hits him in the head". I informed her not only that it is ok but encouraged.

I just realized I've been calling Jeff Pendergraft the wrong name all night. It's Pendergraph. My bad, don't really care. Has anyone else noticed that Kevin O'Neil slightly resembles Larry David. Isn't that a bad thing. If you watch Curb your Enthusiasm, you know what I'm talking about. Larry's life is always going wrong. And Chase hits the 3. I don't know why he doesn't shoot more.

2 point game, 2 minutes left, Cats ball, Dillon dribbling, ball swinging around McClellan takes it up, foul on Boateng, AND ONE. Which reminds me, we need more of the Senior leader McClellan.

Abbott for three, and it's good, ball goes back to the Wildcats, swinging it around and travel on Hill. As important as Hill is to this team he's gotta work on his fouls, shot choice, and turnovers.

We're tied with under a minute left. ASU almost gets the steal Budinger drives, dishes to McClellan, can't hit it, ASU gets the board. Twenty Eight seconds on the shot clock, 30.2 in the game. ASU ball at half.

ASU will most likely be holding for the last shot. Foul on ASU loose ball, Abbott pushing Chase, we're not shooting. .4 seconds, looks like we might be in OT. Dillon's pass off by a few inches, Chase can't get the shot off before time expires and we've got an extra period to look forward to. And Mrs. Dom's first words of OT, "Uhhh I hate overtime" and just said "What ugly cheerleading outfits" "ASU" Every woman watching the game had the exact same thoughts at the exact same moment.

We need to get a foul on Pendergraph and get him out of the extra session, ASU once again narrowly avoids another shot clock violation with a ridiculous off balance 3. Hill should have definitely dished that one out, he wasn't gonna get that call in OT. Ball's loose, players a loose, and Hill's slow getting up and he got his 4th foul. He's been suffering from Hip injuries for a while. ASU is at the line trying to get their first lead since 4-2. Pendergraph out, UA needs to take advantage, and Hill finally connects on his jump hook. ASU Time out, Pendergraph should b coming back in.

ASU down 1 with just under 3 minutes left. We need an ASU miss and UA fastbreak to get Pendergraph out of this game. Long miss, longer board by Pendergraph, ASU resets, kick out to Abbott, Harden drives, it's good ASU back up 1.

UA swinging the ball aound the peremeter, inside to Hill played close by Pendergraph and puts it off the glass, Cats back up 1.

Harden drives, questionable no call by the refs, off the lass and in, and McClellan slow to get up.

McClellan back up, drives can't conect, Wise on the long board, can't make the 3 ASU ball 11 second differential, Harden drives can't connect, another questionable no call, ASU scores, up 3 with 13 seconds left. UA needs a bucket, bad. Not necessarily in must shoot 3 territory, but damn close.

Maybe losing to ASU will light a fire and get Lute back, there are some things UA basketball just doesn't do. And losing to ASU is #1, if KO can't get it done something needs to change, and it should be Lute.

Wise can't connect on the off balance treyball, Scum Devil board and Pendergraph goes to the line, looks like their losing streak ends at 12 to UA and this guy is not happy. Losing to Kansas not acceptable, but losing to ASU not allowed. Pendergraph sinks the FT, and the 2nd, 5 pt lead game over.

It had to end sometime. Well back to The Girls Next Door or Project runway or whatever else is on.

Bring back Lute...STAT.

rivalry games part 1

So I just finished up a nice dinner of steak and rice while watching the first few minutes of the UA ASU game and decided hey I'm gonna try a Diary a la Bill SImmons. If it sucks, I apologize. And remember the r key doesn't work so I'm copying and pasting every time I need to use one and forget about numbers since half my numbers don't work. Stupid house fire screwing up my computer.

Bayless isn't playing, but he is dressed. He will be available if necessary. When you're leading scorer is missing playing time, that's a bad thing, but you all knew that.

I love the fact that ASU fans are so amped. They've lost like 12 straight against us, and only won like 33 % total all time. I'll give these scum devils some credit, they are surprising us a little right now. I think it's mostly emotional at this point. Not used to actually still being in the game after seven minutes.

We just pulled Zane Johnson's redshirt. Is that really necessary in the first half?

Ty Abbott just pulled a bitch ass foul against the streaking Budinger on his way for a fastbreak dunk. Shoulda been an intentional. But it's his third so he's heading to the bench. Apparently he's the pride and joy of my hometown, a Desert Vista Alum, good for him, I didn't realize my old High School team got bad enough to send players to ASU, we used to be good.

Another Budinger fastbreak, and he got his ninth point of the half. We're off to a TV timeout, Sendek had to stop the Bleeding.

So I decided to make a T-Shirt on one of those online stores earlier. I think I made it up but it says:

What are the two easiest things to get in Tempe?

1. STDs
2. A Degree

Thank you thank you, one of the many shirts that might soon be available on The BearDown online store.

Arizona is really starting to piss me off this year with all of these turnovers. Yes we need more defensive production, and we're doing well with that but we have to protect the ball too. Bob Elliot just 100% ageed with me. That's scary. Bob Elliot falls into my list of most hated things about sports on TV and that's a hard list to crack. The list at the moment consists of:

1, John Madden
2. This is Our Country
3. Bob Elliot
4. The Basketball/Football/Strongman/etc IQ phrase, I don't know why but I really hate that phrase

Antwi Atuahene, that's a fun little name. ASU does always tend to have at least a couple odd names on their sideline, Ike Diogu comes to mind, yeah that's about it for odd names I can think of. I don't know a whole lot about ASU, I admit it I really don't know where I was going with that, it might not make the final cut. Then again, if this is a running diary I guess I shouldn't go back and edit.

It's only thirteen to eight right now... Hill Huge Block...anyways, this has to be one of the slowest/lowest scoring games in recent memory and Hill missed yet another jump hook. Jordan I love you man, but they're not falling today square up. At least you're backing it up with another solid Defensive stand in the lane.

So Steve Kerr just popped up talking about the lack of rivalry, quality statement, you gotta love that guy. And that also reminds me just how classless the ASU fans are taunting Kerr after his Dad's death, maybe murder I'll have to look it up, back in the eighties. And they were chanting and taunting after Bobbie Olson died. Completely classless.

McClellan and Wise just hit back to back treys with an ASU bucket in between finally some points start coming.

U of A chants are starting to ring in the Tempe crowd.

"0/5...he's a 50% shooter...so he'll make the next 5". Yeah that's a pretty ridiculous statement. We'll see if I eat my words.

Wise is tiny, and ninety % of the time in baskebtall that's a bad thing, for some reason Wise cuts through defenses really wel. He did it against Oregon, Oregon State, and he's doing it against ASU. Unfortunately, he also just got his 3rd foul and will be on the bench for the rest of the half. Not good when you're only healthy PG is on the bench in foul trouble.

Hill just too another bad shot, eight seconds left on the clock and a fallaway jumper, completely unnecessary.

Let's hope we see something spectacular from Zane. He could be a great replacement for Chase when Chase goes to the NBA. He's a six foot six inch G/F who is pretty consistent from about 15 feet and in. We'll lose Budinger's outside shooting but Zane will grab more boards along with Jennings and Hill and maybe Bayless and possibly Chase, and we can be flat out dangerous next year.

We're at 2 minutes ang counting left in the 1st. ASU turnover, UA rushing for whatever reason, Chase missed the short one, ball looked like it went through the bottom.

So about that Zane Johnson not hitting the long ball, he just dropped his 1st collegiate shot and it just so happened to be a trey ball.

ASU followed up and Polk dropped a rebuttle, and Arizona Time Out. Bob Elliot just passed "This is our country in the most annoying things in TV sports. Congrats, not an easy task, quite an accomplishment. He even did it without saying his trademark obnoxious YAKKA catchphrase.

We're at half. Zona up seven and better come out fired up like they did when losing to the Beavers last week. I'm taking a break. Kevin O'Neil just said the best way to keep ASU out of the game is to keep winning. Where did he come up with such an insight, pure genius.

Has anyone else noticed ASU hasn't changed their jerseys in about 20 years, maybe actually longer. They look like a High School team. I'm not saying that I love the Extemely tight top/Extremely baggy shorts look we're supporting but still most High Schools have updated in at least the last 15 years.

On a side note I wanted to inform those of you, who might not actually care, but we are at 100 posts for the site. And we crossed over the 1100 total visitors mark earlier this week, 1000 in the last month. I'm not gonna lie, the more visits we get, the more we update. The more comments we get the more we update and responses you'll get.

A few more links for ya

A few more links to add onto yesterday's shortened batch.

I'm not huge on discussing politics because, as we all know, it tends to get a little heated, but I know there are many people out there who would also appreciate This Picture I found of Hilary Clinton and the soliders. Please note the red cirlce.

About time a Major Conference starts to speak out against the terrible BCS system in place right now.

I realize This is about as half-assed as it gets for posting links but Paul Rudd is hysterical. It's amazing to think he is the same guy that was in Clueless. I am completely of the opinion that he did not have one single line scripted for him in Knocked Up. Go back and watch it I'm fairly positive he is just being himself for 95% of that movie. Or maybe he is acting and it's like when Woody Allen "acts" like Woody Allen.

Speaking of Woody Allen movies Melinda and Melinda is one of his better works in my opinion and I really enjoyed the idea of a Drama and a Comedy as two separate movies in one (you'll see what I mean if you watch it). Will Ferrell does an amazing job as seen in this clip here doing his Woody Allen impression like many of other leading Allen actors have done.

I'm not big on the arts but some of These are amazing, the intricate detail is really something to look at in depth.

I was on the U of A site earlier bouncing around looking for updated football recruting lists and whatnot when of all things a women's basketball headline got my attention. After reading This
I'm fairly confident UA women's baskeball will win it all this year as long as we can avoid foul trouble. 2 players? Are you serious?

That's about it for right now. There's also some plans in the work for a possible site shop so check back to get official BearDown gear from all aspects of the sports world.

A Glutton for Punishment

As much as I want Petey to leave USC to make the PAC a little more competitive for the rest of us (look at the turnaround he gave that program if you don’t believe me) I have to ask Arthur Blank what the hell he is thinking.

What is the most appealing thing about Carroll? It could be any number of things his record of fair play, his 76-14 record at Southern Cal, the one and a half National Championships he brought SC, his offensive wisdom, or great recruiting. Wait… Fair play? National Championships? Recruiting? Those are things that make a great college coach. Those are things to look for when searching for a college coach. Despite Atlanta’s performance this past season, aren’t they a PRO Team.

33-31 as an NFL head coach. More than twice as many losses and less than half of the wins. He wasn’t bad, he was over .500 and even won the AFC East in his first year in New England. Pete Carroll might deserve a second chance as an NFL coach. It’s every coaches dream to be successful on the next level. But there are more than a few reasons to reconsider this.

Let’s look at the teams that entered the playoffs this season:

Belichick – NFL assistant/Coordinator for 16 years before his first NFL Head Coaching gig
Gibbs – NFL Asst. 7 years before his first NFL Head Coaching gig
Coughlin – NFL Asst. 7 years before coaching in college (BC for 2 years) then first NFL Head Coaching gig
Phillips – NFL Asst. 16 years before first NFL Head Coaching gig
Holmgren – NFL Asst. 5 years before first NFL Head Coaching gig
McCarthy – NFL Asst. 12 years before first NFL Head Coaching gig
Gruden – NFL Asst. 7 years before first NFL Head Coaching gig
Del Rio – NFL Asst. 6 years before first NFL Head Coaching gig
Tomlin – NFL Asst. 6 years before first NFL Head Coaching gig
Turner – NFL Asst. 7 years before first NFL Head Coaching gig
Fisher – NFL Asst. 10 years before first NFL Head Coaching gig
Dungy – NFL Asst. 15 years before first NFL Head Coaching gig

Then there’s these reasons why not to hire Carroll, the coaches with less then 5 years in the NFL before becoming Head Coaches:

Lane Kiffin – (4-12) in his first season with Oakland
Brad Childress – (14-18) in his first 2 seasons with Minnesota
Cam Cameron – (1-15) in only season with Dolphins
Scott Linehan – (11-21) in 2 seasons in St. Louis

And of course remember Bobby Petrino – (3-10) before deserting the Falcons this year

And these aren’t the only college coaches who failed on the next level, just the ones of recent memory. You need to be in and around the NFL in a low stress/low focus position for a few years, 5 at least, in order to learn the NFL game and be successful. It’s a lot different and not just because the clock stops on 1st downs and one foot in bounds is all you need for a completion. It’s a vastly different game. Blank do both you and Carroll a favor go after an NFL assistant, a coordinator, preferably one in the game for awhile looking for an opportunity. And as a side note look out for Norm Chow to take the reigns at an NFL program in about 3 years and become one of the better NFL coaches. If he can wait the requisite 5 years to take a shot.

Carroll Caught Looking

So you're at a bar/club and you see this hot ass girl sitting on one of the stools kinda hanging out by herself. You kinda recognize her. You realize that she's hooked up with a couple people that you know. The rumors floating around are that she's a crazy ride but you'll pay for it. Fogged by the glitz and glamor of the atmosphere - as well as the booze from celebrating the fact that you're drinking on a Tuesday - you go for it. Then BAM herpes.

I feel like this is the scenario a college football coach walks into when they've had success. The NFL looks like a tasty tart, a larger salary, more control, a larger stage. However, when making the move, they're blind to the mistakes of the others, only to walk into the same trap all the ones before them did. The failure as a college coach in an NFL franchise sticks with you - not unlike herpes - for it takes a ton of work and wins - Valtrex - to make people forget about the debacle.

Now Pete Carroll, considered to be a genius of this generations football coaches, is posted up at the bar eyeing that potentially infected girl in this case, the Atlanta Falcons. Come on Pete. I remember a few years before when you were very stern about not leaving the USC organization for any NFL team. Well besides the Raiders, quite honestly I think you've picked the most infested franchise in the nation. Better stock up on those AB's and bring some rubbers cause if you're in for the long haul, you're gonna get burned. Pete it's better to get caught looking.

Quick Video Post

Ran across this great video of Marshawn Lynch on the Mayne Event going over why the Entertainment Capital of the State of New York is Buffalo. Oh and also why I always liked Lynch but hated McGahee (even though his knee helped me get a ring and the phrase "I hope he gets McGaheed").

In case you don't know what getting McGaheed is here is another video for you viewing pleasure:

Both Videos cheered me up last night after a tough loss so thought I would pass them along.

Welcome to Believeland

After yesterday's Ohio State tragedy I am still alive...barely. Its been a great year for Ohio Sports or a terrible year depending on how you look at it. For now lets take a look at the Believe In Cleveland campaign ill follow up with the reasons why its getting harder to do so.

The I believe in Cleveland campaign was initiated in hopes of spurring some excitement for the renovations that city plans on making. You know boast about how much money they are putting in different parts of the city, the success of those working there ect. Unfortunately it has turned into some what of a running joke, and the following advertisements are very real. You can check them out at : http://www.cleveland.com/believe.

AD #1:

So you’re saying that this girl moved from L.A. to Cleveland and the only people who thought it was a bad idea were Clevelanders?

AD #2:

Finally some answers to the Cleveland Rocks legend..sorry Ian Hunter but the credit goes to… a pair cowboys with questionable sexualities (one of which kind of looks like G.W.) who judging by the pic may or may not know how to use photoshop.

AD #3:

The old guy from Jurassic Park lives here, Cleveland Spared All Expenses.

AD #4:

Following this picture and quote on the printed Ad was this follow up story: “So there I was, a single Mom living in Southern California. My son and I had survived earthquakes, the Malibu fires and the occasional riot. OK. You almost get used to that. But the first day of kindergarten-when my son had to go through a metal detector- I said to myself, ‘Ann, even though you work in the movie business, you’ve got to leave. Now.’
She goes on to talk about how she moved into a house in Bath Township that would have cost ten times as much in L.A. Here are a few things wrong with this testimonial.
1: Cleveland is more Dangerous than L.A
2: Bath Township is not in Cleveland it’s in Akron

We should take a lot at some crime statistics of L.A where she moved from compared to Cleveland for which she is campaigning to Akron where she actually lives.

Per 100,000 People L.A. Cleveland Akron National
Murder 12.4 16.6 12.7 7
Forcible Rape 27.3 98.29 86.2 32.2
Robbery 370 947.1 294.4 205.8
Aggravated Assault 377.2 485 202.6 336.5
Buglarly 524.8 2131.4 1606 813.2
Larceny 1539.2 2658.4 3416.8 2601.7
Vehicle Theft 654.2 1443.2 649.2 501.5

Most of this crime probably came from an Area in Cleveland known as The Flats which is/was a district of bars and clubs in downtown Cleveland right on the banks of the Cuyahoga River. What happens when you build a bar district next to a river in a city already prone to violence? Oh yeah.. People started drowning, crime sky rockets, and riots ensue. At one point the Cleveland PD actually raided ten club and boarded up more than half of them on the spot. It started to get a pretty bad wrap..don’t believe me? Ask the The Enquirer

I looked for some footage from news reports about the riots or of the closings... but came up empty. I did, however, find a cinematic beauty entitled “Pre-Brick Throwing party”. It takes place on the good side of the flats, and is followed by another masterpiece of the same quality of one of the guys throwing a brick through a guys car window. Search for it on youtube if you like, not really that great of a video but you get the idea. I can’t wait for The Flats to come back!!

She may be right about the housing being cheaper in Bath Township though....Just ask Lebron

Ill have a follow up post soon outlining the year in Ohio Sports as well as ideas for the second round of the campaign....

Goose in Hall, Hawk in Wait

49 votes short this year. Hawk finished with 65.9% this year. He's got 8 more chances, but based on past trends won't make it next year with Rickey Henderson guaranteeing to "steal" the spotlight, as will other newcomers Mark Grace and Mo Vaughn. Also grabbing attention will be Jim Rice in his 15th and final year (16 votes shy this year). The 2010 ballot might just be the one to get him over the top. There is however a chance that he could piggyback on Grace's Hall attempt next year, and there is a chance that 2009 will mean Mark Grace, Andre Dawson, and Ron Santo (veteran's) all going into their deserved place in the Hall.

Keep yourselves busy for ahile

I'm gonna hit you guys with a hand-full of links today since I don't really feel like talking about the game last night. Yes my prediction was right but I was still rooting for the Buckeyes. Just because me and 4 Real aren't roommates anymore doesn't mean the roommate rule is no longer in effect. And I haven't heard from him since about 6 minutes left in the 4th quarter last night. He was in Ohio last night. Uh Oh. We might have to cover that later. Anyways off to the links.

Found a great article on the Ghost of Wayne Fontes site about what the Lions need to do next after firing Mike Martz on their quest for the Super Bowl. The reason I like this? It reeks of being written by a Lion fan, the personal anguish I'm so familiar with based in Sarcastic attacks on the Front office.

What do Confucius, Sigmund Freud, Ulysses S. Grant, Abe Lincoln, Jesus, Lennon, Poseidon, Letterman, and Conan O'Brien all have in common? They're all great men with Great Beards. If you missed it last week The Late Show and Late Night reappeared on our nightly TV screens and the hosts (Letterman and O'Brien respectively) with Great Beards. Letterman looks very grizzled indeed with his Grey Beard and Conan actually surprised me a little. When I first heard of this I had my doubts that the 44 year old O'Brien could grow a beard. And on a side note, I'm all for the Writer's getting a piece of the online action (a major reason for the recent WGA strike) after all I watch plenty of the online offerings to keep up when I miss an episode (in me pre-DVR days), and I really want it to end ASAP. Lost disappearing after a half season, and the chance that FNL might not be back are not good things in my opinion, even if Lost is getting ridiculous and FNL has slipped a bit in it's sophomore season.

I'm sure by now you have seen them on some site or another but Busted Tees has some great and funny T-Shirts. 4 Real has the "You have Died of Dysentery" shirt I love the 756* shirt and Mrs. Dom actually has more than a few including the "I gave my word to stop at 3rd" which former Indians 3rd base coach Joel Skinner agrees with. (ed. note I really wanted to find video of that horrendous mistake but can't find it anywhere)

I guess This might be the reason that the announcements tell the fans to stay off the field and goal posts after huge wins.

This College Football Tour Guide visit to Tucson was hysterical. From the obviously belligerent students to the fact that there is the reference to the "Rock Solid" SI cover that every U of A fan knows well (from August 1994). Yes that is Tedy Bruschi and yes Arizona was in fact #1 less than 15 years ago. And listen for the ASU girls ... statement that requires a editors comment and a definite rewind.

I'll have more later but apparently when I'm "at work" I'm supposed to actually "do work" and not in the Rob and Big sense. Enjoy the links, I'll have another batch later.

It's Back in Black (and Silver)

It happened last night, and I had a front row seat. The TV tuned to Deal or No Deal, Howie Mandel’s glistening head, Corey Feldman and Deborah “Debbie” Gibson of 80s fame on the screen, but most importantly, the countdown clock on the left side of the screen. 5 Minutes. 3 Minutes. 2 Minutes. 1 Minute. Hold my breath in anticipation, then it happened.

It started with a black screen and a mini montage of the early 90s Mullets flowing, steroid induced rage, glistening bodies in tight spandex. It was my childhood coming back to me. Then we got our first look into Gladiator Arena. I was giddy with anticipation. The Red and Blue exchanged for Silver and Black in a Raider fan’s wet dream. This Gladiators is bigger and more important.

Winners move along, bracket style (with eliminator times being the seeding), until a champion is crowned and gets an opportunity to do what many have dreamed and few have done. They will move on from David to Goliath and become a Gladiator themselves. This I’m not a huge fan of since the male Gladiators range from about 6’3” 230 to 6’8” 290. A 6’1” 195 accountant/weekend warrior doesn’t strike fear in me. Also Mayhem is Mayhem, Justice is Justice, and so on, they are their personas, they have no other name in our eyes. How are we supposed to feel when there is a Gladiator named “Anthony” and the winner can’t all of a sudden change his name to “Diablo” or something else. It’s not right.

I love Wolf. I believe he was in my Gladiator preview a couple weeks back, he howls and barks, he lives up to the name. I would be a little frightened to see him waiting for me at the top of “Pyramid” growling. Titan is playing the Capt. America role, the moral leader of the Gladiators. Then there is Toa who I also mentioned. The Rock’s cousin comes out in full Samoan dress. He has a short leather sarong, the tribal tats and does a mini version of the Haka.

The Wall, Powerball, Hang Tough, Pyramid, Assault, Gauntlet, and Joust have all returned to grace our TV screens. As has a version of The Eliminator. In a strike of genius and parity the producers/developers have decided to put the uphill treadmill at the end, when the contestants are thoroughly defeated. As we saw with Koya (“The Destroyer” as called by her fans) you can be leading by leaps and bounds but if your body is too tired to make it up the treadmill at the end it doesn’t matter. In what was the highlight of the show, in my opinion, she fell flat on her face about 12 times and the stand-by replacement came back from a ridiculous deficit to win. The two new events (debuted so far) are “Hit and Run” and “Earthquake”. Hit and Run is running back and forth on a bridge while 100 lb wrecking balls are swung back and forth by 4 Gladiators, and Earthquake is wrestling on a moving/swinging platform. Another new addition is the neck braces Gladiators and Contestants have to wear in half of the events. There is a lot of unecessary extra padding compared to past Gladiator memories.

In the first episodes we had blood on the face of an Ex-Marine, Bonnie, who cracked her forehead on the gas lines in the pool (they swim under fire in the new AG) and a knee/leg injury that was never fully explained by one of the female contestants. She was on crutches after pulling what appeared to be a Milton Bradley move in Powerball, crumpling for no apparent reason. We had a contestant, Jeff, who missed his opportunity 14 years ago (LA traffic made him late) go in and do very well for a man in his late 30s or more likely early 40s. He also got warned and had to restart in the Gauntlet after throwing punches at Wolf and Titan. In the debut of Earthquake it looked like one of the ladies was about to take the Gladiator, Fury, off the platform, but Fury was able to grab the rope suspending the platform and fling the contestant off, to land back on the platform. It was a pretty spectacular move. Other highlights included the former/current contestant/old man trying to flip Wolf over him while climbing the Pyramid, unfortunately for him Wolf grabbed ahold and wound up essentially power bombing the old man off the climb. There was also an attempt by Toa at a kill shot tackle that was ducked by the Contestant “Double A” and allowed him to make it to the 5 point line as time expired.

It's also fun to try and see how many times a show Hulk said "Brother", in one interview I could have sworn he said it at least 8 times in a minute. That's high even for his record. And alas I do miss Mike Adamle and Larry Csonka. What are they doing that's so important they can't do the play-by-play and color for the new Gladiators. In fact, isn't former announcer Theisman out of a job since being fired from MNF?

The 3rd episode is on tonight, during the National Championship game. I don’t expect many to watch it live, but it is definitely on the DVR at my house to watch post game. And as for Koya the Destroyer, to quote Brian Regan, did she think that rhymed, Koya the Destroy-er. (His was about Dora the Explor-er) if you haven’t seen his new stand up on Comedy Central “Standing Up” be on the lookout for it, he did most of that material when he was here in Tucson and I was in tears. What's the best thing about the return of AG, the chance that a Video game is in the makes. Imagine XBOX 360/PS3 or the Wii playing AG. Amazing.

It Takes a Big Man to Admit When He's Wrong...

...and right now you can consider me William Perry. It’s not often someone goes out and just admits it (Clemens, et. al.), but I was wrong. I liked Tampa to win, at home, New England “Hangover” curse I made up, Eli, Tiki, Ronde, everything. That was my double secure lock of the season. It just goes to show you, this is why I don’t gamble, it proves everything I’ve known for a while. Mainly, the undeniable fact that I, am an idiot. But those of you who know me, know that I am an idiot, and there has never been a doubt in their minds. With that said.

LSU will win tonight, consider it my triple secure lock of the Bowl season. From the guy who brought you TCU over Texas, comes LSU over Ohio State.

The Superdome is practically a light jog from home for LSU and their fans. These fans travel to an insane extent as it is, when it’s a stone’s throw from Baton Rouge to New Orleans, they will be there, and they will be loud. This is the closest thing to a Home National Championship game we have ever seen.

LSU beat some really good teams, Ohio State beat…Michigan. Ohio State’s defense is good, Laurenitis is really good, built in the Urlacher model of a quick LB who plays all over the place as long as the DLine keeps the OLine off of him. The rest of the Buckeyes D aint that bad either. But LSU has been dominant on both sides of the ball all season.

LSU is in the all powerful SEC, the Big Ten is looking at being demoted in favor of the WAC as far as the BCS conferences go. LSU will win this one hands down, have I ever been wrong?

Tampa Bay Will Win

Quick post since I get to go home in 5 minutes.

Tampa Bay will beat the Giants this Sunday.

This is a guarantee, it has nothing to do with Ronde's comments earlier this week:

"Of course we want to play the Giants. They [win] ugly, Shockey's hurt and Eli has been inconsistent."

Though it's very true, and it has nothing to do with people speculating that Tiki is giving him and the Bucs inside information. It's not the same team it was last year, and I seriously doubt Tiki can tell them that much more than they know by watching film. I seriously doubt that he would actually do that. No matter how critical he has been of the G-Men and some of their players, it was reported earlier this week that he would be wearing a Giants hat at the game.

The reason is simple, the Giants will be suffering from the New England Hangover. 4 of the 15 times New England won a game this year, the team they beat won the next game (Bills, Browns, Cowboys, Redskins) the other 11 victories were the in the midst of or the beginning of 2 game+ losing streaks. 11 times the team that lost to New England lost again the next week. And the 4 times the losing team won the next week they played the Jets, Dolphins, Vikings, and Jets. Not really teams that should be lost to ever.

Put everything you go on the Bucs, they will win Sunday. It's my double secure Master Lock of the season.

An Open Plea to the U of A Men’s Basketball Team,

You keep us entertained, and we really appreciate it. You make the tournament every year and not too long ago made it all the way to the Elite 8 and were a few minutes away from yet another Final Four. These are the things that excite people about college basketball season. And U of A is one of the Premier programs. This year, I’m not gonna lie you are playing incredible basketball, at times (ex. Kansas), unfortunately teams like Memphis and UCLA are just a little bit stronger, and that’s ok. You guys are young. Budinger, Wise, Hill ... you're all Sophomores, yet you combined for 57 of the team’s 76 points, 23 of the team’s 30 boards and 11 of the team’s 16 assists in last night's contest.

Nic Wise, you came into last season as a very highly touted Freshman product who looked to help the team by learning and taking over the Point position. Unfortunately you came in a little overweight and overwhelmed and really never hit any kind of stride, averaging just over 8 minutes and under 2 points per game. You slimmed down a little bit going into this season and have finally hit a serious stride. You have put up 50 points in the last 4 games replacing the injured Freshman standout Jarryd Bayless in the last two. Even more amazing is that the numbers don’t tell the whole story. For those of us who watched last night’s game, the Wildcats were sluggish at first and were losing at the half. You were the only reason Zona was close at half and put the team in play to win that game. At one point in the game the touted 2006-2007 Pac-10 Freshman of the year (Chase Budinger) was 1-9 from the field, yet Arizona was still in the game. Every time the Kitty Kats needed a boost there you were with one of your many reverse/spectacular/acrobatic layups under the hoop or the perfectly timed trey-ball. Basically Wise, you were unstoppable last night.

Jordan Hill, you're good. I mean you're really good. And the scary thing is, you've actually gotten better seemingly by the week. Since last season you have doubled your minutes and rebounds, tripled yours points and cut down a little bit on fouls (though you still needs to work on it). In the first six games of the season you averaged a little over 4 boards and about 11 points per game. In the last seven games you've averaged about 16 and a half points and 10 and a half boards. You also managed to cut down on fouls, and conversely added quality defense and minutes to go along with it. And you didn’t even pick up a basketball until your Junior Year of High School, you're getting better, and will continue to do so.

Chase Budinger, you're an incredible athletic talent whose numbers have slightly increased over a very nice Freshman year. You decided to stick around instead of go in the draft (many thought you could have been a late 1st/early 2nd round guy). If you continue at the pace you're at now (with increased defensive attention given to you since people know just how good you are) there is no doubt that you can be a 1st rounder next year. But you came to Arizona, like many of the past, present, and future Cats, to learn from and play for Lute. Coach O’ Neil is doing an extraordinary job stepping in where he didn’t know he was going to. Well you have gotten better this year and were great last year. But like I said, you came to play for Olson, who comes back next year. Next year will be a very good year for you if you stay.

So what’s the point of this U of A love-fest? It’s simple, to Misters Budinger, Hill, and Wise, stick around another year, your classes aren’t that hard (we all know this), college is free, college life is always a blast (most of us know this) and the girls in Tucson are damn fine. I realize I’m asking you to give up on some serious cash flow, but you’re gonna get it either way, so why not stick around another year. If you still (which you should) have that serious competitive drive that got you to start playing ball and continue into college then you should want to win the National Championship. I’m talking to you too Bayless, you’re good at the point but you’re a better off-guard and we all know this. Imagine next year:

Not having to force (signed recruit, top PG prospect in the nation) Brandon Jennings into immediate action. Wise at point, Bayless at his natural off guard position, Budinger playing the 3, and Hill locking down the inside alongside a freshmen rotation of Emmanuel Negedu and Jeff Withey. Your lineup would have Jennings, the top incoming point guard in the country, as a 6th man, coming in resting Wise, Bayless, and Budinger and learning the offense and doing some serious damage to opposing defenses with those 6th man energy surges. By March this could be either Jennings or most likely Wise, coming in with those energetic surges the likes of which aren’t all that common in the NCAA ranks. Unfortunately you guys are losing Dillon (defensive specialist and damn nice guy) Brielmeyer (big body, bigger heart) McClellan (Senior leader) and Kirk Walters (a.k.a. Big Nasty prior to all the health problems) That’s a core of the team that’s been around well almost as long as I have been in Tucson. You four were there for that Elite Eight run, and you know what I'm talking about. You guys are going on to bigger and better things and we hate to lose such quality role players like you guys, but to lose one or two or more of these young Sophomore talents, who can stick around longer, it’s back to the middle of the Pac again.

Look at what the Cats did back in that ill-fated Elite Eight run a few years back Salim Staudamire, Channing Frye, Hassan Adams, and Sleepy Staf were running that team. Two seniors, Salim (Heart) and Frye (Soul) were the major leaders with Hassan (Intensity) helping out. Staf did an amazing job as a Sophomore running the point and the rotation of Ivan, Walters, or Rodgers, filling in well. They lost in the Elite Eight. The year before when those guys were all a year younger, the best player on that team was a sophomore from Springfield, IL. Andre Iguodala. In Iggy’s sophomore season his teammates (Channing, Salim, Staf, and Hassan) all had to grow, which they did by the 2005 Madness. If that team would have still had Iggy in T-Town, there is not doubt in my mind the Kitty Kats would have won another title.

The same will hold true for this team. I hate to break it to you but you aren’t winning the National Championship this year. If Budinger/Bayless/Hill leave then you definitely aren’t winning next year either. But maybe with another year of maturity, and some outstanding Freshman talent, a big body or bodies inside to help out Hill, Lute back on the sidelines, and Coach O refocusing on continuing to build up the defense (which he has done an incredible job of this year for the most part), this team has a serious shot.

So this is an open plea to you, the Arizona Wildcats Men’s Basketball team. Listen and learn from O’Neil this year. Build upon that success, get bigger, stronger, faster, better in the off-season. Let the Freshman next year ease into the game without the pressure that Bayless had to go through this year. Most importantly though. Stay another year. UA needs to win a title in something other than Softball, I need one of my teams to win a title in something other than Softball, Lute needs to win another title before his retirement. These can all be accomplished next season with the right attitude, chemistry, and most importantly, roster.

You're Hired

Well that might have been the best job interview I have ever seen. Bill Stewart, who some thought deserved a chance to coach the former #2 team in the country, made believers out of those who were really important in making that decision last night. In a decisive, well played contest (by the Mountaineers) WVU trounced the Sooners in last night’s Fiesta Bowl.

West Virginia officials have stated that Stewart, who has been with the program for 7 years and 2 Head Coaches, will get his chance to lead the Mountaineers next season. The contract sits right now as an incentive rich 5 year deal worth 800,000+ per year. Stewart says it’s a dream come true and the players couldn’t be any happier. He was called “the glue that kept us together” by Fullback Owen Schmitt and has all of the players respect according to standout quarterback Pat White. I for one am a fan of this decision, staying within the program is a much better idea, I think, than going outside the program. Stewart already fits in the system, and it’s been a successful system, so why spend time and money trying to find someone who fits in the system. You can quote Stewart himself on that, “things aren't going to change much. Why would I change ... ? Rich did a fantastic job here. We got the same coaches, the same players." Look out for WVU to have a successful year next year building on this year’s success as well as the recent Big East success.

For those of you who wonder if he will be able to be successful under the scrutiny of taking over a BCS team, just look at what he did in the last couple weeks. It was just over two weeks ago (Dec. 16) that Rodriguez snuck out in the dead of night to take the job at Michigan. This West Virginia team prepped, coached, and maintained by “Coach Stew” flat out beat up on Oklahoma, who had a very real chance at being in the National Championship picture going into the final couple weeks. If not for the unfortunate loss to Texas Tech, without Starting Quarterback Sam Bradford, there would have been no question that they would be playing in New Orleans Monday instead of Glendale last night. So congrats are in order to Stewart and the Mountaineers proving they can do it without Rodriguez. Of course the Sooners haven’t fared well in Bowls recently, losing 4 of the last 5, and the 2 most recent to a minor conference (Big East: WVU and WAC: Boise State) in the Fiesta Bowl. But that’s a whole nother story.

Hall of Fame Debates

Well with the unfortunate return to work so too come more updates. To those of you who stopped by over the last week and a half and wondered why there were so few updates, I apologize, life got in the way. BC hit Phoenix, Ahwatukee, and Vegas, and 4Real spent time in Believeland and Portugal. Whereas I was in Tucson for most of the time, but was otherwise consumed by moving, the future in-laws visiting, and the Holidays.Cooperstown season is upon us (votes released January 8th) and it’s time for a quick update.

Everyone keeps saying that Roger Clemens will be the first test of the Mitchell Report’s impact on the Hall of Fame. I disagree I think it will come a lot sooner, say next week when Chuck Knoblauch is or isn’t elected in. If you read a column on this site by some idiot, here, saying that Knoblauch deserved to be in and should be getting in this year, blah, blah, maybe that moron should have waiting like A day for the Mitchell Report to be released before making a statement like that. Now let’s not point fingers at who that columnist was because, playing the blame game isn’t always fun.

Andre Dawson’s best Numbers: 736 Runs, 1597 Hits, 98 3B, 438 HR, 1591 RBI, 314 SB, .279 AVG, .983 Fielding %, 1977 Rookie of the Year, 1987 MVP, 8 x All-Star, 2 x MVP Runner up, 4 Silver Slugger Awards, 8 Gold Gloves, 29th All-Time in RBI, 35th All-Time in Home Runs, 10th All-Time in Sac Flies, in fact he is currently in the top 50 All Time in 12 offensive categories. Pretty decent career, that was actually cut-short by injuries due to the terrible conditions of his original playing surface in Montreal. Hawk is one of six players in the 300/300 club, one of only 3 in the 400+/300 club (Bonds and Mays), and one of four in the 300/300/2000 club. To put it in layman’s terms, the man was a machine built to play Baseball, with a cannon of an arm capable of throwing out guys at 1st who looked to have a guaranteed single.

Now Hawk’s Bad Numbers: 2002 - 45.34%, 2003 - 50%, 2004 - 50%, 2005 - 52.3%, 2006 - 61%, 2007 - 56.7%. This is flat out ridiculous, his numbers say he belongs in and if not his numbers he was an all around good guy. And Hawk never weighed more than 200 lbs, and for a guy who’s 6’3 weighing 193 it’s pretty much guaranteed he never used any HGH or roids.
Oh, and Dawson was the focal point of a quarter of Ryne Sandberg’s induction a few years ago, stating that Hawk was the best player he’d ever played with.

Less deserving is Shawon Dunston, but it’s his first year on the ballot and I personally loved the Shawon-O-Meter. He probably won’t get in but his numbers are good enough to garner at least the 5 % to appear on next year’s ballot. He and Sandberg were a double play tandem to be reckoned with, Dunston was a part of 729 DPs in his 18 year career.

Another Cub on the list again this year is Lee Smith. The Closer is 2nd All-Time in saves after recently being passed by (U of A Alumnus) Trevor Hoffman. In 18 seasons he put up a 3.03 ERA in 1022 games. He had 478 saves and an astounding 1251 K’s in 1289.1 Innings, 12th All-Time in K’s/IP. He was a 7 time All-Star and had a .976 Fielding % and 1st All-Time in Games Finished. In 5 years on the ballot he has maxed out at 45% of the vote, last year bringing home only 40%, his first decrease.

Rod Beck is on the Ballot, and he will not get in this year and probably never will, but Shooter had some pretty solid numbers in his 13 year career. 286 saves in 704 Games, 644 K’s in 768 Innings. Closers haven’t made a major impact on voting (Lee Smith, Rich Gossage not in HoF) but with Bruce Sutter’s induction they are gaining some momentum, so it’s too early to call the Late Beck done for in HoF voting.

The aforementioned Gossage is on the ballot, and without boring you with his numbers let’s just say he is has the best shot of any of the above based on prior Hall voting he has increased every year, while openly campaigning for his enshrinement. He fell 21 votes shy last year and is looking at a very good chance this year. This is something that Smith should be rooting for, more relievers getting recognized for their specified role means that Lee will get in one day, being one of the game’s best closers.

Bert Blyleven is again on the Ballot and again will not be elected in. He was as dominating a pitcher as they come (5th All-Time in K’s) but K’s don’t just get you in and in 22 years I believe he only had one 20-win season. Wins get you in, he had a lot of wins (287) but he also had a lot of losses (250) and in a 22 year career that’s an mediocre average of about 14-12 per season, that’s not a Hall of Famer. He also allowed a lot of Walks and Hit Batsmen, a big reason for the 250 losses.

Jim Rice might get in this year. 8 time All-Star, 2 time Silver Slugger, 2452 Hits, 382 HR, 1451 RBI, and a career AVG of .298. He’s right on the edge, but like some of those above, his votes have increased each year. Especially with this year’s crop, he has a good chance to get the remaining 12 % needed to get in. His career numbers were on par with those of Andre Dawson, higher AVG but lower in most other statistical categories. I believe Rice should be in, and you better believe if Rice gets in this year (his 2nd to last eligible), there will be a uproar of Hawk supporters who will hope Dawson is able to build off of Rice’s success.

Tim Raines falls into the same category of Rice and Dawson, a great player during his time, put up some damn good numbers (808 Stolen Bases, 1330 Walks, and a .294 Batting Average). Unfortunately he played in Montreal (loses some appeal) he fell short of 3,000 hits, and didn't really hit for much power. Then again, he was the ideal lead off guy. He got onto base, and then manufactured more runs.

On a sad note Ron Santo is still not a member of the Hall yet but will be up for election again next year with the Veterans Committee vote. Santo had an outstanding career similar to that of Hall of Famers Carlton Fisk, Yogi Berra, and Johnny Bench, but never got quite enough votes while eligible for the BBWA election. Oh and the 9 time All-Star with 342 HR, 1331 RBI, and 2254 Hits played his entire career fighting Type 1 Diabetes after being told his life expectancy was about 25 years old.

That’s about all for now and the Hall of Fame stuff. And on a particularly odd note. The “r” “6” “7” “8” and “9” keys on my computer at home aren’t working. It’s funny to realize how much you use a letter when you have to copy and paste it every time you want to use it. It kinda makes my posts over the last couple weeks from home a little better huh, it’s like playing hurt.

Bowl Update

In Progress: USC's defense is plain swallowing up the Illini. Juice has noting working for him and Mendenhall can't do anything because USC is keying on him big time. It's gonna be a long day for the Fightin Illini unless they can get the passing game going, but by the look of things so far that's probably not going to happen.

Mike Hart fumbled twice today, inside the 5 yard line. Going into the game he had 0 fumbles in 983 collegiate carries. He crossed the 1000 carry mark without a fumble and proceded to fumble twice inside the 5. Amazing. But the Lloyd Carr era ends with a Capital One Bowl Victory over Defending Champ Florida. You might not like Carr but he was a good coach and a good guy who just couldn't beat Tressel and at least got to go out on his own terms.

Being a fan of a Pac-10 school, Joe McKnight scares the hell out of me next season. As of right now he's averaging ove 10 yards per carry.

I hope Hawai'i can shock Georgia tonight. Georgia scewed me ove almost evey single week in my pool, and Hawai'i winning will definately make people start to seriously reconsider the BCS failures. Back to Back years with an undefeated WAC team beating a major conference team in the BCS games would be very hard to overlook.

USC just scored again, the chances for the men from Champaign is starting to look pretty slim.

Felt like posting a couple things. Tomorrow when work is dead slow I plan on making another update or two and hopefully it's an I told you so column about Hawai'i. Till then.

The Downfall of HD

Happy 2008 everyone.  Hope you had a safe and fun celebration last night ringing in the New Year.

I recently got HD for my LCD TV and it has been very nice to watch the Bowl Games this weekend in HD.  I have always been a fan of the HD, better is better.

This is not a report on how great HD is though, in fact I have seen the downside of HD TV.  While flipping between games the Fiance landed on Seal: Music on Ice.  Not only was this terrible because it was ice skating which is not entertaining, but there were more than a few close-ups on Seal and his scarred face.  I feel bad for the guy I really do, no one wants to have those scars.  Then again he's married to Heidi Klum so I really can't feel anything but jealously on second thought.  I plead to those of you in charge of programming at NBC no more ice skating and no more HD close-ups of Seal.  Even if he is the genius behind Kiss From a Rose.
